So I'm 40-years-old and my wife and I just had our second child together. We've pretty much decided that we are done having children for a variety of reasons and have decided that a vasectomy is the way to go. Just wondering if anyone else has experience with this ... good, bad or ugly. Thanks in advance. :)

My dad, a two long running friends have all had this done and the only thing that I've heard complaints about is the freezing, which is apparently very painful. All of the above listed people only took a half day off work if that tells you the level of the pain after :)

    Good luck :p

I had mine done after work one day. The procedure is pretty easy. The hardest part is the tugging of the vas. Then it feels like you got kicked in the nuts for the next week. I have complications (minor) now and then when sperm builds up against the tube wall where it was sewn shut. It's like major major blue balls. I get that about once every 4 months or so.

It's not a big deal at all. Like Dave said the worst part is the tugging - it's just like if you pull a little too much on a testicle, that uncomfortable nauseating feeling in the pit of your stomach.

Get good support for afterwards - a properly fitting jock strap and then some good snug underwear. I switched from boxers to boxer briefs, probably for good, after my vasectomy. The extra support helps a lot.

The peace of mind is worth the discomfort, and that's really all it is - discomfort. It goes away and that's that.

I found the shot to deaden the scrotum FAR more painful than the actual procedure; stung like a mutha ...

Be careful about icing it too long afterward. first day, maybe two, ok. I used ice for a week, and I think it slowed down the healing.

I'll second the support thing (jockstrap, etc.); I was doing some pretty physical things about a week after to help out my Dad, and OMH - it felt like they were gonna fall OFF.

So in short, it's truly NO BIG DEAL, just as long as you use your head afterward.

Oh -- and it beats the HELL out of the sh__ you'll go through if you make HER go through the sterilization; trust me, you'd FAR rather get a little slit in your nutsack than put up with having her go through her version of this surgery!

No Doctor will perform a vasectomy on a 17 year-old.
You pretty much have to have kids and be over 30 or at least be over 40.
Hell, I was 32, married 11 years with two kids and I had to get a note from my wife!
(Can you believe it? I'm fucking serious!)

That sounds like a really great idea. I should get that done. Do they by any chance give you a certificate that will say something along the lines of "No, bitch, that's not my kid and here's proof"? That would be swell.

They used to give you a tie pin that was a little tiny pair of scissors.
But that fell out of fashion when aids came along and made a condom mandatory.

I just had a vasectomy on the 15th of this month. I have my reasons. Let me tell you, if you're thinking about getting it done, there are some risks that the doctors don't always elaborate to you.

When I went home after the operation my scrotum was about the size of a grapefruit. That was the most horrifying moment in my entire life. I had to go back for surgery, they had to drain the scrotal hematoma that developed.

I'm sitting in my bed now with ice on my balls. I'm glad I had the operation but right now I'm not a happy camper. If I had any idea what was in store for me then I would have waited.

Please read up on the subject, ask as many questions as you can so that you won't have any surprises.

    Hope this helps.

Today things are feeling a little better, mostly due to the Vicodin they gave me. The bleeding / draining has almost stopped completely. I have an appointment on Thursday to get the tube removed so everything can close up and finish healing. The initial cost of the operation was supposed to be around $1700, but because of the "complication" I have to pay the hospital $4000, and that's not even the final amount. Fun times.

Let me know if you have any specific questions about the procedure.

I had one 2.5 years ago. Totally regret it at this point. It still hurts on a regular basis. I've got an icepack on them now. It seems like when they are loose and dangly they hurt worse. It's actually just the right one, with a permanently inflamed epididymis and it descends a bit lower than before.

The autoimmunity thing is pretty scary too. The doc tells you that the sperm just get absorbed into the body, but he doesn't tell you that the body treats the sperm like foreign invaders and goes into a permanent fight mode against them, which opens you up to a greater risk of many diseases. Basically your body is allergic to itself.

Used to be I was just glad to be sterile, but there are nonsurgical ways of becoming sterile, no need to go fuck with your plumbing. don't trust what the doc says, do your own research and talk to many post-vas guys. There's lucky ones of course, but up to a third have long term complications.

I generally discourage anyone from doing it period. Like I say there are nonsurgical alternatives and you don't have to have your girl get her tubes tied, which is a much worse surgery.

Thanks for the replies. Haven't checked in for quite awhile. Anyway, I really thought it over a lot, met with a doctor, asked all the important questions, thought it over some more .... and decided it's not for me. My wife is cool with the decision and she has no intention of getting her tubes tied. For now, we are doubly protecting ourselves. Birth control plus condom. Of course, it doesn't feel as great as unprotected sex but you just never know if the day might come when we want another (for whatever reason). I'm 40 and she's 34 so we are likely done with 3 kids (2 of our own plus my stepson), but don't want to shut the door completely. :)

I'd go for it if it's a mutual decision.
