...of the awesome tutorial someone created for felting dreads? And I don't mean felting fake dreads, I mean actually felting/crocheting decor into existing <real> dreadies. It was sometime last fall when I remember seeing it and I haven't really been around much at all since.... I've tried searching but only come up with how to felt wool extensions... Help a sistah out if you have info! <3
pinch hairs lightly with non dominant hand, poke wreaklesly in and out and up and down and side to side with crochet hook in dominant hand until desired texture/tightness is reached thats about all you need to know. if your crocheting decorative dreads into real dreads i'd comb out a bit of your dread and a bit of the decorative dread, at least 3 or 4 inches of each and crochet them into themselves just to make sure they stay in good. but i have no experience in doing that, so thats just me speculating. good luck i'd also throw a hemp or embroidery thread wrap over the connection for a lil bit just to hold them together. dont tie too tight though so the hairs can slip around and knot up on their own
felting is the most damaging tool of all. I would recommend crocheting over felting but wouldn't recommend crochet to anyone. So if you are into the fake hair look, crochet if you don't want it all to break and fall out.
Thanks for the tips! I've been beading, wrapping, crocheting my dreadies for a while... goodness knows lots of hemp/beads have been eaten and lost ... but I've been searching for this one particular post which was very detailed and gave some excellent ideas to add a more artistic flava to some heady dreadies Just thought someone might remember it--she did a great job with it. Love, Love!!
Thanks! Hey, Chemigals--are you on the Fire Garden? I recognize the name & location!... if it is you, this is Lindsay Love!
Yes yes its me lindsay,I never knew you had dreads I saw your pictures ago on FG but I did'nt see them.Sorry if you already told me though Have you got a felting needle and some pur wool roving? You can but both pretty cheap from ebay if not, you need to wrap thin layers over your dreads and push the felting needle in and out so the roving gets pushed into your dreads and stays there. You do this over and over again untill its smooth. Then add more layers and colours if you like. I should also say felting needles come in differen gauges so what I did was buy a pack with the different sizes in and try each one out untill I got the right one, you'll know which needle is best as the roving will go in piece of piss I ended up taking my extensions off the end after a while and it was'nt too bad to get them out,I just picked at them,I know that the needle can be damaging to the dread as it can cut the hairs inside so just be gentle. I hope this helps, also I must go on the FG again soon as Ive been pretty slack with it Hows the hooping coming along? Are you into the poi hooping and mini hoop isolations?I gotta get some vids soon lol!
Thanks for the tips, I'm excited to take some time this weekend to decorate! I most definitely have to get some new vids up too! I just ordered new wicks for my hoop (ooooh the excitement of new kevlar!) And have been spinning a lot of fire poi as well! Minis are coming along okay--poi has definitely helped strengthen my left side!-I want to burn with mini fire hoops by next year I'm off and on the FG as well, hope to always keep in touch though! Happy hooping!
