Is London the world's number 1 city?

The number 1 city if you like the pleasant sight of 6 cameras on every single utility pole. Can you be fined for flipping off those cameras? I would like to take a trip there just to flip them off. The city of London would have 10,000 pictures of me posing with my trademark 'flipping the bird' pose.

 

Why? Give me your reasons.

I would venture to say so. But I haven't been there, and the OP apparently lives there. So, maybe he could tell me what the hell is there to do in London and dispel my prejudices.

 

Well I think Copenhagen, Berlin, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Rome and Paris..even Florence and Bergen, are all cooler. Though London is way cooler than Oslo, Dublin (but not the rest of Ireland) and Madrid!!

Of course each city has its own special quality and it is hard to compare, but...since the topic was made.

What on Earth would make someone think London was the "number 1 city"?

 

I hate living in London, but it is basically the worlds greenest city, loads of parks, and it has Camden Market, but generally I hate it and I love the country way waaay more.

London has the night-life speaking for it, there really is something for pretty much everyone at almost all times.

It´s anonymous and one of the places where you can be who and what you want without being judged, though I guess this is more due to the ignorance of the Londoners than the acceptance. With that in mind, if London is the only place in the UK you get to see, you´re gonna have a horrible (and wrong) image of the British: Londoners are rather cold, and while politely, not nice or friendly at all, there won´t be many occasions where you get to speak to strangers in the public, in my experience it´s almost like the English get more friendly the more far away you get from London.

It´s cosmopolitan and international though, if you want to, you will meet people from all over the world. Foreigners, especially backpackers, who stay in London for a while to work up their funds, tend to stick to themselves and there is a vast traveller scene, with veteran globetrotters, gap students and drop outs alike. Have met many a soul, coming to London for a gap year to improve their English or see Europe (flights from London are quite cheap) and ending up a few years, if not indefinitely.

Job opportunities still seem relatively good, though it´s worth noting that the availability of casual labour jobs has gone down enormously with the extension of the EC by a few Eastern European countries (Don´t get me wrong though, the more the merrier, I reckon) Without papers jobs will be very hard to get by nowadays.

Rents are killing you in London. If you´re into that kinda thing, you may want to look into squatting, it´s become hard as well, but there are still people getting away with moving into an unused building and living in it (You will want to make sure that the house is owned by the council rather than private people, this will ensure that when they do want you out of the building, they must go the legal way and won´t beat the hell out of you, though excessive police violence towards squatters is also nothing unheard of.)See also

Also hear out for squat rave parties as an alternative to the glamorous and dear mainstream clubs.

Camden market and the parks are certainly extremely cool, as mentioned before, it´s nice to stroll down the markets, have pint of a cold one, and chill out in the middle of Hyde Park or the bank of the river Thames at Sunset in Richmond (which is basically a nice little small town outside London but accessible by the underground or train), you need those kind of
sanctuaries in the hectic rat race that London is.

Prizes are high, if you want to enjoy London, don´t expect to save any money, doesn´t matter how much you earn, you´ll find ways to spend it.
Education opportunities are great, EC citizens will be able to make all kind of courses for free or subsidized.

There is a great pub scene if you will, and going for a few quiet beers after work is a habit, shared by people from all walks of life, I remember something hearing about the pub being the English everyday Joe´s living room in English lessons, guess that describes it rather good.

I guess overall it´a cool place, met some good folks there, partied pretty hard at times, had many different jobs and also got some inspiration out of the place and it´s varied vibes.
It´s a good place to live for a while and if you´re unsure where to go in Europe, it´s as good a place to start as any European Capital (I guess), but it´s also a good place to get out of if that makes sense.
Just my thoughts after a while in the place.

 

I've wanted to visit London and heard it is a cool place.

But then I was wondering what makes a certain location the number one place to live? I'm not critiquing anyone but was wondering what everyone looks for when they decide to live there.

I'm looking for new places to visit anyways.

Number 1 to visit or Number 1 to live?

I love New York and London, but I would hate to live in either. On the flip side I, like a previous poster, hated living in the city and I much prefer living in a small town. But for tourists, this place has not so much.

Number 1 city to visit:Sydney? Maybe. Cape Town? London and New York are cool, but too expensive.

Live? I like where I am, but I would like Savannah or Charleston better, methinks.

Prominent in Music, Film, Fashion, Oozing with Culture and History.

The Financial Heartland of the Earth, it recieves more tourists than any other city by a long, long way.

It will be the only city on earth to host the Olympic Games 3 times, it's the largest city in Europe with over 8 million inhabitants.

It has several worldwide famous landmarks, I bet you could name more landmarks in London, than you could Paris, or Rome or even New York.

To name a few; Big Ben, London Eye, Hyde Park, Oxford Street, Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, London Bridge, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, The West End, I could go on..

N.Y.C. has it all - and more!

Although, I live in the state of New York, I wouldn't want to live in the city. I need some grass and trees, to be honest.

But I must say, hanging out in New York City is a blast - a thrill a minute, lots to do, and it's safer than you think. Most of the people are friendly and the night life is the best. Tons of concerts, big and small. All kinds of music, museum, culture, history, art, parks, Broadway Shows, Sporting events and plenty of food. You name it - and NYC has it!

It's the city that never sleeps and it's second to none.

 

I do agree, New York is the capital of the world, but London is one of the centres of the world. As are Paris, Sydney etc.
