Well, Duck, if you're going to keep writing you'll have to update your grammar and syntax skills. Writing is a lot more than just committing to paper. And nothing supports writing more than reading. If you don't read, you won't write.

I kind of want to write sci-fi without the science (which bores the fuck out of me). I don't mean that in a negative way, but I prefer the more conceptual kind (by the likes of Asimov and Bradbury) than all this high tech stuff. Problem is, I think most of the good ideas have already been written. The last decent one I had was pretty much the same as Dark City (once someone explained the plot to me). So the alternative is to write more straightforward, plot-driven fiction, but with a more sci-fi setting. I'm not sure how good it is.

I get the same with fantasy stuff; I like the idea of it, the genre itself, but a lot of what I read of it leaves me cold. Once you've read Terry Pratchett it's kind of hard to take the real stuff seriously.

I've tried other stuff: I had a shot at chic lit which went quite well for quite a long time, but then I just tired off it because it felt horribly cliche to read it. I find genre a little tricky to write within, because there's so many conventions which you either have to work around or write within while adding your own slant on in (harder than it sounds).

I enjoy crossing genres(I'm not being rude by the way). My humble book crosses mystery, war and literature. Some people freak out when you give them something that does not conform to current rationality. Well, if we didn't try new ideas we could still be living in caves. Hold on! Come to think of it, we may have been better off when we were living in caves! I better start getting rational. Seriously though, there's not enough time on this great big rollercoaster ride to be choosy, or regretful, or undecisive about what to write. So write whichever way pleases you and if you want to add some structure to your work to convey it to a wider audience, then be very critical with your work and go over it again and again, until it's how you want it. Personally, I went through my novel hundreds of times and still I find some words that I would prefer to substitute. Obviously, you musn't get carried away, otherwise you'll have a book that's almost perfect, but will never get published.

    Totally agree :)

LOL Blackie, I've always wanted to write porn (or at least good sex scenes) but can never really find the words.

    I tend to dabble in...
historical fiction: mainly early 20th century Russia (Tsar Nicholas II) it's a lot standing intrest.
chicklit after a fashion: Lots of random stuff that's not particually literary and serious, but hey they said that about Jane Austen.
Non fiction: reviews, articles and such. Mainly for school/college/uni.
Fanfiction: My terrible and prolific vice. Seem to have knack for taking a base idea and running with it. Though I always stay on the right side of outright plagerism (sp).

Have never felt any compulsion to write Si fi or fantasy. Mainly because I don't read it. But also because it seems so complicated and removed from real life. I just can't get into stories/books that require footnotes.
I've friends how love it and one discusses it at length for hours.

I'm going to start working on an 'epic play' soon. It's part of my course. Never done anything like it before so it'll probably be crap.

I love to write drama, non-fiction, short stories, short plays, poems and song lyrics. I have always thought of myself as a writer and publish a personal zine every two months with my writings, both fictional and non-fictional.

I guess the secret is to tap into niches which are alien enough to be interesting to those who aren't actually aroused by them.

If anyone wants to write some porn involving a Belgian Waffle they're welcome.

The Belgian Waffle is a sex act me and my mates (mostly me) made up, it involves taking a shit in a girl's gaping twat.

As far as I know it's never been administered. But I'm hoping if I keep mentioning it on-line and spread the word, it will enter the world of urban legend and some dumb frat boy will actually try it.

One can also demand "speedy service" with their Belgian Waffle: this is where the guy then fingers the girl til she squirts, launching the turd across the room like some kind of ballistic missile.

So yeah, if you're so good at the porn, make a speedy service Belgian Waffle gangbang sound erotic.

To illustrate the point I made earlier about creating cross-genres, I have whipped up a little story on my site called Zombie: A Love Story. You can see it at http://www.kissofthewhitescorpion.com/Zombie.htm complete with illustrations. Not exactly CGI graphics and not the most convincing storyline, BUT if the Scorpion can whack them out like that in a few hours, then what excuse have all those overpaid muppets in Hollywood that scratch their nuts all day got? Now a Zombie love story has not been done before, namely because it caters to a very small minority: a non-existent one, but it should give you of some ideas of combining any genre with another to create something with perhaps a little more depth and interest. Oh, and since it's horror, no one under 18, please. And any nut-scratching muppets from Hollywood reading this that think they can rip it off, think again, it's copyrighted so get your own ideas.

There's lots of ways to do it though. You can either go for a juxtaposition of styles, like Shawn of the Dead, or something that fuses styles totally seamlessly, like Fight Club. Only in a book, obviously.

first and foremost, I do poetry. I've also written a couple of plays and a screenplay. Another is just a hobby I like to do when out at the coffee house or wherever I can people watch, which is caricatures. They typically turn into erotic caricatures these days, cos man, it's just too hard to resist...

Oh yeah, and I do songs, a whole lot lately, too, as the musical front is really starting to come together... :)

I write a lot of illegible, unconnected rants. I have a million pieces of fiction, non-fiction travel writing and short stories. Nothing ever get's fully completed, except for maybe some poems I wrote.

I have journals of single lines that I thought of while on a bus, answers to idiots encountered during particularly testing days, letters, thoughts, ideas, phylosophical musings, songs and lots and lots of bullshit.

    Peace,
    Aidan

I write treatments and (eventually) screenplays in several genres- Suspense-horror(creature features), slasher-horror, day-after-tomorrow techno-horror sci-fi, sci-fi, off-the-wall romantic comedy, dramedy, action-adventure, crime and true-life crime [or life in the underground accounts, as I like to call it], and Drama.
In any case, I like writing for film best because, unlike whitescorpion's "nut-scratching muppets from Hollywood", I write films, not movies, and all my stuff is character driven- whatever the genre.

I also write non-fiction (only because I'm quite good at it, not because I particularly like to), poetry and lyrics (by compulsion), and I've written a couple of novellas (which I immediately cast aside and rewrite as treatments anyway).

But I really want to write short stories- and they are the toughest writing of all.
