ive been told i got anemia and i not too sure what it is, i know its something in your blood and it makes me very pale and ill sometimes but apart from that i dnt no! someone tell me!:& ellie xxx
It's a lack of iron, I've got the same. It can also give course to tachycardia (like me!) and other sickness..
No, I don't think it's lack of iron... It's just that hemoglobin in your blood is low. It's nothing serious, you should just eat more fruit and red vegetable and it will be ok. Also, tachycardia has something to do with your heart, it's not dangerous, too, but has nothing to do with anemia.
Okay, nursing student, coming through.... There are many different kinds of anemia. The most common one (and the one you probably have) is Iron-deficiency anemia. It is caused by not having enough iron in your diet (are you a vegitarian?). Iron is found in hemoglobin, the red protein that gives your blood it's color. The hemoglobin (and thus, the iron) is what allows your blood to absorb oxygen from your lungs and transport it to the rest of your body. When you don't have enough iron and/or hemoglobin in your system, less oxygen goes to your cells and you have less energy. Although anemia is not usually life-threatening, it can become so if left untreated. It also creates heart problems, because your heart has to work that much harder (and much less efficiently) to get oxygen to your body. When this happens, you can develop tachycardia (a rapid heart beat) which can lead to heart failure. Remember, anemia is a sign of malnutrition. Your body is not getting the iron it needs, so in order to get rid of the anemia, you must either start eating more red meat, or, if you're staunchly opposed to that, take iron pills. BTW: Why didn't you ask your doctor about this? Personally, if I were diagnosed with anything, I would be asking a million questions to my doc. Anyway, here's a link... http://www.anemia.com -Kate
I'm anaemic too. Since I dislike most kinds of red meat (probably contributing to it in the first place) I've been on a course of iron tablets, which have some very unpleasant side effects, for about three months, and according to the last blood test it hasn't raised my iron levels enough so now I have another three months of 'em.
Iron supplements are the devil. Of course, I say this being deadly allergic to them... but almost everyone I know who has ever taken them has spent so much time throwing up... Simulato, is that you too? Does that happen to you? I'm 100% diet-control now, which was hard at first because I used to really hate red meat. Now, of course, after realizing how much better I feel after eating it, I crave it at least three times a week... Oooh one more thing Simulato, if you're not allergic to iron (which I'm assuming is the truth since you've been on them for three months and are still alive) you may want to discuss iron injections with your doctor... that way, it goes straight into the blood stream. That's how I do my B12, and it's way better than tablets, because they (the tables) take longer to break down and get active inside your body. Just a thought.
It tastes like death, but if you need it you need it, right? I mean, we all have different blood types and some require it where as others can't even tolerate it.
Yeah, at first I was throwing up heaps, but after a month or so I got used to them. Still throw up a bit though. Iron injections... I'll talk to my doctor. Thanks. Red meat, I don't know, it's too chewy and it tastes gross. Never liked it...
Strawberry is right on with her explanation on anemia.. low red blood cells..your blood is made in your left shin bone..you may be low on vitamin B-6..perhaps a wheat allergy.,if you are a vegen.. try using a tablespoon brewers yeast and wheat germ sprinkled over a green leafy salad twice a day.. also it would be beneficial to drink a smoothie made from bananas and raspberries in the mornings ... the herb yellowdock and blackstrap mollasses are a good organic source of Iron also your zinc may be low.. the yellow dock and Blackstrap molasses will bring your zinc level back up.. a couple of glasses of water..with a half of fresh lemon squeezed would help purify your kidneys.. Brightest Blessings and Happy Healing..
strawberry's reply was dead on. awesome. if you don't want to eat red meat, eat: tofu artichokes lentils beans (ie: kidney) chickpeas broccoli beet greens (ew), spinach, (pretty much any leafy green) and whole grains. some breads are fortified with iron. you might want to eat more of these around the times you'll be raggin'. i read something about people with anemia always feeling cold, because iron plays a role in regulating body temperature. is this true? i never knew that, but it made sense, since i usually feel cold. also, strawberry, you said something about the heart having to work harder to supply the rest of the body with oxygen... so if you don't mind me asking, i've got a question, doc. my heart beat is around 90 beats per minute, and my blood pressure is generally around 100 (the top number, anyway, i cant remember the lower one). so i guess thats a slightly elevated pulse and a lower blood pressure... does that sound like it might be related to my anemia? or is that a normal combo? i've always wondered about that odd combo, because a higher heart rate generally correlates with higher blood pressure, right? thanks for any insight in advance.
