I had two healthy vegatarian children removed from my custody because they "didn't know" how a vegetarian's blood tests should be different from an omnivour's. Curious neighbors called social services, and, after some time, they were taken to a clinic against my better judgement (most doctors try to talk you into including milk in your diet. They simply have not done their homework on the alternatives). The court ruled the children were "nutritionally compramised", however, their tests showed they were actually higher than normal in some nutrients, but iron and protien showed low. It didn't occur to me until recentely, after extensive investigation, that the "compramise" has a meaning, even though it didn't apply. When a body is low on one nutrient, it will rob the body of others that are similar. But woith my kids they really f____-up. The protien test they used is a test not even for protien, but another substance that is present when the omnivorous kind of protien is abundant, called "albumin", which is the same substance found in egg whites. Eating meat causes their bodies to produce large amounts of albumin, but it's non-presence in a vegetarian has nothing to do with whether or not they are getting adequate protein. The iron, it was learned later, assimilates more closely to how an omnivour's looks on a blood test if you include a vitamin c source at the same time you eat your iron foods. They have it listed in their medical journals as that the iron metabolizes better, but what are they going on but those same tests. But the fact is is that it's not that the iron wasn't there, it's that they don't have the tests available to find the kind of iron that vegetarians have, same problem as with the protien. And any person would think, that the doctor, who had knowledge that we were vegetarians, should have been able to consider why lows only showed up in the areas that are related to eating meat.
In addition, my kids were otherwise healthy. No sinus or skin infections, happy, not withdrawn or lethargic, they showed no signs of malnutrition, but because the words "nutritionally compramised" were used, it took the case. My suggestion for persons looking to, or already raising their children as vegetarians, is to find a doctor who will back you, physician's assistant, or even homeopathis or herbologists--but any kind of professional that has been to college and has a degree in any area of medicine, so that you are prepared when gov. officials bust in and want answers, because no matter how much sense you make to them, they won't believe you without professional backup.
That fucking sucks!!! How the hell can they justify stealing your children because they are vegetarian?!?!? I think it's bullshit. Will you be able to get them back? How old are they? I'm completely bent over your story.. I hope you get 'em back. Fuck those meat eating ignorant assholes for stealing your kids!!!! Fuck your idiotic neighbors for being so foolish and shitty!
i am sorry that happened to you. your neighbors...geez your children did not have bruises why the hell were they intervening...oye...i plan on going to school to become an herbologist so hopefully i will not have this problem and i am moving to an area where most of the population is vegetarian...
That is one of the most disgustingly discriminatory stories I've ever heard. I feel bad now for all the complaining i've done about receiving scathing comments at family dinners and no choice at restaurants, etc. There are bigger problems at hand for the vegetarian community and this is a perfect example. The world sucks for both humans and animals. I wish I were an amoeba.
Wow that is really horrible and sad. I saw a show on t.v. it was based on a true story where the mom was very health conscious and because she raised her kids that way, vegetarian etc. they painted the picture as her being a psycho and they took her kids away, now this woman really was endangering her kids they were malnourished, but it is the way they painted her image, as being 'one of those crazy vegetarians' that disgusted me...anyway I am very sorry...that sucks.
