Canton Teen Hospitalized After 'Huffing' Propane
    http://www.courant.com/community/canton/hc-canton-propane-huffing-0924.artsep24,0,6598621.story

CANTON — - When police and EMTs arrived at a Dunne Avenue home Sept. 8, they initially thought that the 13-year-old boy was having an allergic reaction.

But they soon realized that the boy had been inhaling propane gas in an attempt to get high, and in the process he had suffered a severe case of frostbite to his eyes, mouth, throat and lungs as he inhaled the gas that comes out of its container at 40 degrees below zero, Canton Police Chief Lori Coppinger said. The boy also suffered tissue damage.

Earlier reports that the boy's hands were amputated are untrue, according to a spokesman for the boy's family.

The boy was rushed to Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford, where he was placed in a medically induced coma, she said.

Coppinger said that she had never heard of "huffing" — or inhaling — propane and wanted to alert parents and children so that no one else would suffer such grievous injuries.

"My heart just goes out to that family, to the boy," Coppinger said. "He didn't understand the ramifications of what he was doing. Hopefully, other kids will become aware of this and not do it.".

A hospital spokesman said that the boy, who was not identified, was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

Canton Middle School Principal Joseph P. Scheideler declined to comment about the case. Superintendent Kevin Case could not be reached.

Inhalant abuse, or huffing, is most common among adolescents aged 12 to 17, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Teenagers will use a substance "that's volatile, that gets into the air easily," said Buddy Sangalli, director of the Connecticut Poison Center at the University of Connecticut Health Center. The substance can be inhaled directly from its container or concentrated by spraying it into a bag. The goal is to produce a high, Sangalli said. Teens use everything from propane and butane to common household products such as computer dusters, spray deodorant, spray paint and even canned whipped cream.

The injuries that the boy suffered were consistent with huffing propane, Sangalli said.

"A frostbite injury would appear as a burn," Sangalli said. "The end result is the same — damage to the tissue." A severe case of inhalation of propane can interfere with blood circulation, Sangalli said. As a result, "tissue dies and it becomes gangrenous."

Sangalli said that there are several cases a year in Connecticut in which youngsters are severely injured by inhaling propane to experience a high.

There are other risks that children face when huffing, Sangalli said. Huffing volatile chemicals can cause liver and kidney damage, interfere with heart and lung function and cause instant death.

If parents notice that their children appear to be intoxicated and no alcohol is available, it could be from huffing, Sangalli said.

"The opportunities are plentiful out there, and you need to have an extra degree of suspicion as to what these substances are doing in the possession of children," Sangalli said.

How in the, what the fuck ???!!!:confused:
That shit flat out fuckin HURTS if you get it on bare skin.
I know and have a scar on my hand to prove it. Fuel line on a forklift blew when I was fueling it up once.
How does a person even get to the point of actually inhaling it. You would think the pain signals from his hands and lips would have been enough to stop him.
Just goes to show that there are no limits to stupidity.
