I was recently ready to section my hair and start the backcombing process but, to my dismay, I got some gum in my hair after passing out and had to comb out a little section of hair in my bangs. The best way to describe it would be to say that if I were to section my hair, that section would have about half as much hair due to combing it out. What I'm wondering is whether or not this will be a problem.

    Thanks in advance.

It should be fine... If you are going to lock your bangs it's gonna look interesting anyways, so go for it. Why are you choosing to backcomb?

I don't have anything against naturally doing it, but my hair gets ridiculously greasy if I don't wash it every day. I wake up and my hair is basically wet. And this is after using residue free shampoo.

This still does not explain why you want to backcomb... shampoo every day is often the CAUSE of greasy hair, not the cure.

If you use shampoo with residue, yes.

the more you shampoo, the more oil your scalp produces. the less you shampoo, the less oil is produced.

It takes time for your scalp to adjust, no matter what shampoo/alternate you're using. With or without residue, you're stripping oils from your scalp with daily washing.

A month of dealing with the greasies can lead to a life-time of never having the greasies again. Same with some dandruffs.

Alright, that's pretty sweet I suppose. I don't know, I'm just sort of impatient and backcombed dreads look awesome to me. Although I do like that hair style during neglecting that is just messy and knotted, it looks cool. I'll give it consideration.

you should probably adjust to washing your hair less whether you go natty or not.

try washing every other day, then every three days. it takes a little time, but your hair will get used to it and start producing less oil.

I will do that. What method of obtaining dreadlocks would you suggest?

If you are leaning more towards backcombing, then do that method. Don't let people tell you it is the wrong way, just do a bit more research and look at a lot of pics to decide what you want. I had mine backcombed, and maintenenced them religiously, but now almost completely neglect them, and I love em. I'd say try the backcomb. If you don't like it, comb em out, and try neglect. Whatever works for you. Just don't use wax:D

Oh yeah, I wouldn't worry about the lost hair, It'll grow back and dread itself up.

Ahoy … I’m personally big on the washing method to kick start the sectioning / matting process, but ultimately reducing the shampooing is the ideal. The washing method requires shampooing every 2 – 3 days … and then less. I’m currently at once a week, but I haven’t washed my locks for about 10 days now and my hair is not greasy at all … promise!

So it really is what everyone else is saying … washing your hair increases it’s greasiness.

I was just wondering if there was a reason why you wanted to backcomb. I tried backcombing, and it didn't work for me. I realized that I had no reason to try it in the first place other than having read about it in the interwebz. If more people had better reasons for the things they do wouldn't they come closer to achieving their goals, whatever they may be? Why is that people get defensive when I ask them about the reasons they do things? I'm way more open to people who have reasons for what they do, even if I don't agree. "What is the reason for your truancy Mr. Spicoli?" "I don't know"

I was chewing gum when I passed out. Hahaha.

What's the poop and scoop method by the way? Was it a joke?
