depends what you think of as a "true hippie". If, like me, you see them as freethinking people, why would they not have modifications?

"true" hippies is a silly concept.

I think genuine people do what makes them happy and best expresses who they are. People have been modifying their body and playing with different sensation for numerous different reasons far beyond written history.

    labels?

but really, i get what you think you mean by "true hippies" and i've seen plenty of what you would call "true hippies" with tattoos of jerry garcia or mushrroms, or weed leaves, peace symbols, a dove, etc. these are very hippie-ish tattoos.

    so in summation, no!

Don't forget, the art of tattooing was pretty limited Back in Th' Day, sure, pot leaves and dancing bears, but beyond that it was pretty much Sailor Jerry and biker stuff. A guy with a pierced ear was a big deal ffs. Then piercing became huge with the Tribal explosion. Now that tattooing has exploded into an art form in its' own right it's now an awesome form of self expression. And the right to self expression is what a lot of folks out here crave.
When I got my first tattoo, the only women who got tattoos were either go-go dancers, hookers, or biker babes. I was none of the above, I just wanted a tattoo since I was like 12 years old! Sure alot of folks get piercings and tats as a way of belonging to ones' 'tribe', but there are those among us who truly crave this stuff. It's in your blood. That's the only way I could explain it.
