Hi there, I have been able to get my century farm house (those of you who know from other threads). So, I have a few questions and want to hear from anyone who can offer anything: 1) We have foundation problems, facade problems, and, oh best of all, vermiculite that may or may not have asbestos... and original windows that may or may not have lead paint issues... So... I'm contacting a restoration business, but maybe people here have advice for me? and 2) I'm thinking about documenting this ... project ... and turning it into a book. I want folks' advice on style, other books of the type that you'd recommend reading to get familiar with what is popular... what tone? what layout? more narrative? more pictures? I don't really care THAT much if the book will sell... but I want some form of a project to help me... deal... with ... this. (background: dad got cancer, parents needed to sell everything, i was in with them on house and property ownership as we had two adjacent properties, one with house one on which to build; we are now starting over with two more adjacent properties, both with homes, much more inexpensive, but mine will need significant work... significant... :S ... I'm married with a toddler and a bun in the oven). Any and all advice. OH! 3) My husband wants to extend an invitation to anyone on this forum who knows wtf they're doing with regard to renovation, especially if they are willing to work for peanuts and live in a tent. LOL. ... yah... also if you game, that would be awesome (i.e., D&D or World of Darkness, etc.)
Don't know much about restorations, but when it comes to reading, I like reading books where people are being straight up honest and real about what they are doing, admitting mistakes and things that might piss them off. I do live reading DIY style. Pictures are fun. It gives people who may or may not have it easy to imagine what is happening a chance to go "Hey, I get it now". Best of luck to you guys. Sounds like fun times are ahead.
id do it yourself and save money. One of my instructors with no previous construction experience built an additional room onto his house from watching the DIY channel and home improvement books. So if he could do it i dont see why you guys couldnt.
