Yes, Norway kicks all our asses again, though the data for the 2009 report comes from 2007, and since then Iceland has taking a massive beating in the credit crunch, so they're basically tied with Zimbabwe right now. Or well maybe Austria. But for all us awesome people who made the "Very high human development" part of the list Norway Australia Iceland Canada Ireland Netherlands Sweden France Switzerland Japan Luxembourg Finland United States Austria Spain Denmark Belgium Italy Liechtenstein New Zealand United Kingdom Germany Singapore Hong Kong, China (SAR) Greece Korea (Republic of) Israel Andorra Slovenia Brunei Darussalam Kuwait Cyprus Qatar Portugal United Arab Emirates Czech Republic Barbados Malta Anyone who's country is not in the top 38, you obviously live in a third world hell hole. We're sorry, we shall send guns and butter. I love how North Korea is just straight up not on their list at all. http://hdr.undp.org/en/statistics/ Also Russia, you got beat my Mexico and basically tied with Albania, tsk tsk.(Though when the data for 2008 comes out when oil prices tripled and Russia was rolling in money they're probably going to jump ahead 10 spots)
Norway has a lot of oil. Most of the profits from the oil sales go to the government who take care of the people (schools, unemployment, health care). Most of the benefits are free and guaranteed for life and for the life of their children. Here in America (and most of the world) mining and oil profits mainly go to a few individuals.
Well unlike these other countries our people are affraid of seeing the government owning/operating the oil/mining industry... politicians make money by having these companies in their pocket.. but could you imagine the uproar our citizens would have said government took over big oil and mining? our government strategies combined with government corruption would never allow such a thing to work.. at least not right now.. though.. if our economy keeps going to shit.. the government may one day own the oil and mining industry in the US.. they now own GM our only car manufacturer and everyone goes "are you really gonna buy a government made car?"
Pft hell no, your country is basically tied with Iceland when it comes to countries worst hit by the financial crisis, you guys are gonna fall like 8 places next year Also keep in mind those big oil companies pay big taxes, lots of taxes, more taxes then generally the bottom 70% of Americans put together. Norway has a level of oil/oil revenue quite beyond it's size of 5 million people. Plus, we are one of the biggest consumers of Norwegian oil, they get rich on our dollar.
Hey give it a couple of years (although I'd love to live in Ireland). Most of your manufacturing is also moving to Eastern Europe and China.
Damn straight, we all already basically kiss China's ass, America and Britain are the only ones with a real advantage because of a large banking/financial sectors, Britain's close relationship with a lot of it's former colonies, and America, well America just being America
I refuse to believe in Japan until I go there, otherwise I'm convinced they've moved themselves into the internet.
i believe that all Japanese women love getting fucked by tentacles and eels.. and are really fucked in the head.. and no matter how old they are they all look to be roughly the age of 13
hmm im not sure whats going on now that the Lisbon treaty was voted in our government is a useless corrupt waste of space and over 15% of the population is unemployed...still love every minute living here though and being Irish is basically a free drinking pass in every other country :cheers2:
Heck just being part Irish in this country is a drinking pass. I use my 25% Irishness to drink for 240% of me
The oil companies pay big taxes-but not THAT much. They got over 1 Billion dollars in tax breaks in 2006 or 2007. They should be paying much more.
This graph gets thrown around a lot, but even with all the loopholes in place for businesses, it's still true: http://mjperry.blogspot.com/2008/07/exxon-posts-record-3236-billion-tax.html http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily...?chan=top+news_top+news+index_news+++analysis
