Im thinking of getting dreads, I really want dreads like this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRvogPj9b2Y I asked him how he made them, and he answered: "Its natural dreads that came by themselves.... If you dont do anything with your hair, it will get like that" he claimes it took him two years! I dont really have the patiens to wait two years for a hairdo i want today =/ Does anyone have any tips on how i could make dreads like that?
thing about dreads, no matter what method you use, you're going to be waiting at least a few months before you get results that look anything like what you want. Patience is definitely required. I used the neglect method for like... 4 months or so. Well, I got setback once when my cousin attacked me with a comb and viciously combed my hair out.. that kinda sucked. In the end, it wasn't going as fast as I wanted so I looked up a loctician(such a cool word) on craigslist and paid her $100 to twist my hair up with some kinda organic gel (NOT WAX) that didn't flake. Probably more than the service was worth, but she was a nice person and I'm more or less glad that I met her and that she started my dreads. It was a good day, the 4th of july and I celebrated my new locs by dropping acid and watching fireworks that night! so um.. i guess my advice is to find a really cool person on craigslist to do your dreadlocs while watching a twilight zone marathon (did I mention that she was an expert of twilight zone trivia?) then drop acid immediately afterwards. Do that, and you'll have kickin rad locs like me. Guaranteed! turns out i need a better picture host.. but believe me.. my locks.. kickin rad..!!
I dont know how he got em, but you've talked to this guy? He lives right by here, goes to e nearby school. You know him?
dread kinky dread, root natty roots! its halloween season, so just get one of these natural dreads don't happen in a day, brotherson.
I dont know him! Just found his name online and sendt him a nice private message on Facebook! I understand that dreads like that dont just happen in one day! But i really want hair like the guy in the video! And dont really know how to do it!
it doesnt always take 2 years!!! Just look at the thread I made about my nat. locks, they look phantastic and the pics were from 9 mos? Depends on your hair, does it get tangled real easy? Mine always was a bitch to keep untangled so this could be why mine moved along faster, but it does take lots of patience, and a somewhat shitty lookin mess of a head for a while def. worth it in my opinion, id say average 1 year for em to look like dreads goin natural. What I did- pretty much nothin! kept washin my hair every other day with my reg shampoo, slowly increased te days washing it to every couple days, then about 7 mos in started usin diluted dr bronners every couple of days, and voila! Good luck on your journey, pm me if ya have anymore questions
I started out using wax and backcombing but now I'm going the natural route and it is locking up faster than I expected. It definitely won't take them 2 years to develop. What is your hair type?
yes, perfect advice! Wash hair regularly. Don't towel/blow dry it. Don't comb it. There's more 'don't's than 'do's in my directions.. the less you do to your hair, the better the locs come out!
BJ, there is actually no such things as actual locks that have not come from 'neglect’ ... still don't know how much I dig that term, but anyway. One can go to a salon and have your hair sectioned and then backcombed / crochet’d or whatever ... wax and all sorts of stuff put in it, but that's not locks, that's just an ornament on one's head. After the first wash, the ornament won't look like it did after the 'salon'ist' was done. A lot of peeps refer to the word 'dread', I'm not sure about this word either, but I understand that they are referring to 'matted hair'. Now, hair only mats itself and on its own time ... you can keep going back and back and back again to the salon, your money, but each time you go you won't be getting any closer to having locks … at some point one has to just let go and let one’s hair just do it’s own thing, what it does naturally if one doesn’t interfere with it. It's been said a few times in various threads, but here we go again. Part of why locks form over time is because locks are, to a large extent, made up of hair that falls out on a daily basis ... there is no way that you can have, say, 2 years or whatever amount of shed’d hair in your locks overnight. If having locks was quick, 'add water and stir' hairstyle, then there would be a lot more people with them ... and that is why when one knows or meets or interacts with someone who has locks, , one has to respect them for growing locks, even if that person has a nasty personality, no matter how nasty. Whenever you see someone with irie locks, know that it's not an instant hairstyle. The time mission is the very thing that determines who really wants locks and who doesn't ... And Wow, Give Thanks For That ... Jah Guide!
Those dreads look the forum member enjoy's. Nice. Good luck getting em. My fine straight hair would never lock into those cute little locks of lovely.
With the utmost respect... I've had my dreads for over 7 months, backcombed them adn T&R'd some of them and they aren't even near as knotty as yours. YOu are blessed that you have hair that locks like that, but it is misleading to let ppl assume their hair will look like yours after 9 months of not doing anything. Almost every timeline I've seen of just natural dreads, it has taken much longer than two years for them to start resembling dreads. Trust that your hair is the exception.
i kind of have to agree, it doesnt seem like dreads are right for you. i reccomend getting a synthetic set put in and see how you like it then if you decide you are willing to put in the minimum of looking like absolute dogshit for the better part of a year, go for the real thing. there is plenty of methods faster then neglect. but there are only two methods for instant dreadlocks. 1)synthetic dreadfalls 2) go to a salon where they will charge you like 400+ dollars (american) fuss over your head for a few hours, make you look silly, but make your dreads look "perfect" and then come back every two months for a 200 dollar maintinance session to keep your dreads looking perfect (they will never be though, because every time you do this you ruin them more and more
Personally I don't think people look like 'dogshit' when they are forming their dreads. It's all a beautiful process in my opinion.
i dont think people look like dogshit either. but understanding that perspective, imo, is an important part of growing dreads. because to most people. you will look like dogshit. i guess what it is is i've done dreadlocks for a lot of my friends, and some friends friends that i didnt really know. thing is, a lot of people that are totally convinced they want them end up cutting or combing out a few months after they get them. i think this is due to them being unprepared for the process. due to this i tend to talk a lot of horrible shit to people that tell me they want them. not in an effort to talk them out of it. but in an effort to prepare them for whats to come. i find those that accept and understand that they arent going to "look good" for a while tend to actually keep them.
