Hi everyone! Sorry if this question has been asked before (I'm sure it has), but searching for dye/dyeing didn't really provide me with the answers/advice I was looking for. Basically, I'm wondering how long y'all would recommend waiting before dyeing baby dreads? I haven't started my dread journey yet, but want to start growing dreads in the next few weeks. Right now I dye my hair every 4/5 weeks. I wasn't sure if that would be possible with new dreads (I'd imagine having to rinse them pretty vigorously to get all the dye out), and thought perhaps I should dye them closer to my natural color now, then wait for them to mature before dying more regularly? Thanks for the help!
I dyed mine after about a month. you do have to rinse more, but you can dye them whenever really. the more mature they are, the harder it is to rinse all the dye out (at least for me)
before i had my dreads i had blonde in my hair already, then when i was about 2 months in i put red where the blonde was and it wasn't that hard if there's spots you want to dye and you're worried about the dye coming out, since you haven't started your dreads why don't you dye the parts you want now?
Thanks for the advice! I was planning on dying before backcombing/tnr, but if I need to wait months before touching up, it was going to look ridiculous (my natural hair color is a reddish/browninsh mix, but I dye it blueblack which not only fades super fast, but also leads to some heinous roots). Part of me wonders if dying it without using the conditioner might even help the bits of hair stick together more in the beginning since it will be more dry and coarser, but that might just be wishful thinking.
since you dye your whole head it wont be that difficult to do touch ups, it will only be the roots unless you fade. the blonde dye totally helped because i have dark brown hair and it fryes it pretty bad unless i have conditioner in it
The hair will tighten up a bit after dying anyway, due to the damage, so that will help balance out any disruption caused by all the rinsing. Dye just before you "dread" then wait as long as you can be bothered before the next time, but don't worry too much.
i am six month in my neglect method. i have dyed my hair four times now, and the first time was about a month in. so really i say when ever you want just do not use the conditioner that comes with it
yeah, def. do not use the conditioner. it may make them slippery for a few days afterwards, but overall, has a tightening effect. wait as long as you can stand between touch ups. rinse really well. like rinse for 30 mins. at least.
If you use a veg-based dye you don't need to stress so much about rinsing, coz you won't be leaving the damaging metal salts in your hair. Or something. I hardly rinse my Special Effects dye out at all, and all's well...apart from my hair turned pink. Shit.
