I'm mixed about this CD. Of course it sounds amazing, but at the same time, it just isn't as hard (in some cases). The best song on the CDs BY FAR is Battery. Now, many people say the original is better and more raw, but this song has unmatchable power on S&M. That's about all I have to say. I like it, I listen to it.

I felt that S&M kind of ruined some of their best songs like Orion and their other instrumentals. I know when Cliff was alive he wanted to tour with an ochestra, but because of lack of money then they never had the chance. Alot of their songs and solos had a classical feel to them (i.e. Fight fire with fire, To live is to Die), but I think touring with a orchestra kind of ruined most of the songs. In my opinion Metal and Classical just dont mix.

thats debatable, but for the most part i agree. i think that their orchestra tracks have the most original sound, especialy The Unforgivin.

Well, I can't stand Metallica anymore, but I have to agree with Rubin on this one. I've always loved the orchestral and metal bands thing. I think the Deep Purple and the London Symphony Orchestra and Kansas and the Boston Philharmonic were the best of all time.

Have you ever heard the Trans Siberan Orchestra? You'd probably like them.

I think the orchestral arrangements for the most part complimented the songs, added extra tension here and there, and were certainly inventive. They should have put more old classics on the double-cd though, like Seek and destroy, Creeping death, Damage inc. and Blackened, and maybe a bit from Kill em All, too. But overall it was very good, in my opinion.

Now the scene of symphonic metal is competely saturated, with only a few bands sticking out who use their synths-on-orchestra-stance in a good, non-irritating, non-superfluous way. Blind Guardian, Ancient Rites and Rotting Christ come to mind. But these are just a few of my personal choices, I'm not an expert.

I'm not really a big fan of metallica, but I had to get this CD. And what do I think? Good and bad, really. Some of the songs work so well with the orchestra. Nothing really matters is a good example of this. But some songs, like master of puppets, are wrekced by the orchestra. michael kamen didn't have to put the string arrangemnts in like that, did he? Although the brass during the solo is really good.

I kind alike S&M. It's interesting, and what i find most interesting aboutit is that metallica don't slow down, or turn off their distortion - The orchestra works with metallica, rather than metallica working with the orchestra. It's quite interesting. If I were to recommend any metallica album, S&M would be it.
