Not meaning to insult anyone’s tastes, but how does ‘The Flobots’ fall into the Hip Hop genre? That whole ‘jazz–fusion–rock–with someone throwing a rap' style is OK, I guess, but I’m not getting how peeps see it as Hip Hop? Are peeps perhaps mistaking Hip Hop as a vocal style, where it is actually a style of music? :)

HUH? How do you figure that Bro, Hip Hop started off on an instrumental level ... the music ... MCs/emcees, whichever works for whoever, then merged with it. There are still DJs, today, doin’ Hip Hop sets … with no lyrics, just the music.

Not criticising the stuff, the peeps in Flobots are talented musicians, no doubt, but I still can’t see how it can be called Hip Hop … if every musical act that had some peeps throwing a rap was called Hip Hop, then we may as well say Limp Bizkit is Hip Hop

I would agree that Limp Bizkit and the Flobots are definitely not hip hop, but I must admit, I don't have any real clarity on what hip-hop is.

Would both of these be considered hip-hop?

    MC Chris

    MC Lars

Are 2 Skinnee Js hip hop?
    Why or why not?

there is no 'definition' for what hip hop is.

but for a lotta peeps, real hip hop stresses street life, awareness, political, personal, and social issues, and other stuff i could go into if you want to get in a discussion about it. its very broad genre and can include many types of influences. yea ive got a lotta instrumental stuff, just like dub music. but a lot of spoken word poetry can be considered hip hop as well. hip hop can be put over just about any instrumental. it's the content, not the beat that makes it hip hop in my opinion

    otherwise it's just rap.

    I know

.....and i know because of KRS-1

my point is you can just tell when its real hip hop

pop in some slick rick or some krs and you can just hear it in the track.

you can hear that this motherfucker is holding a mic because it gives him a fucking boner.....because he loves what he is doing and respects himself and loves his art

you can tell he isnt holding a mic because of the boner he will fuck a hot bitch with later because of the money he will make on this track. or the fake ass LV print in his leased murcielago or phantom.

listen to the pharcyde. some tracks these guys just bust out laughing because they are sitting around doing what they do. listen to their songs, they dont rap about anything. they talk about nugs, crushing on teachers, back in the day, and momma jokes and please dont pull me over officer please IM DISCOMBOMBERATED hella faded and all i'm doin right now is having fucking fun, thank you fans for buying this.

as much of a doucher as he is, look at flava flav. that mother fucker is intense. i thought he was a fag until i saw him live. this dude doesnt do ANYTHING but have fun and do what he wants. comes out wearing a huge clock and an epmd shirt all the way down to the floor. doucher...... then the beat drops

edit: my listen to these artists isnt me shoving my tastes down your throat, its me using references because i feel that these artists shine through and opitimize what i am attemtping to say

Hmmm, that’s the thing … Hip Hop is a musical genre.

Rhyming, free-styling … MCin’, that was like the ‘cherry on the top’ flavour for Hip Hop, but all of that is nothing without the beats and the rhythms … without the music, it’s poetry.

Sure, some MCs go a-capella, sometimes, and because of their connection to Hip Hop, their poetry can be connected to Hip Hop, but Hip Hop is essentially a musical style that was first created for the purpose of dance … of course the dance styles, graffiti, the lyrics, the lingo, even the fashion to a large extent merged with the Hip Hop style of music along the way to create a Hip Hop ‘culture’ …

But essentially Hip Hop is about the music … the beats, the bass lines, the repetition and avoidance of complex song structures, the omittance of solos, leads … the use of various samples to create single melodies, the breaks … and obviously the contributions of Djs mixing all that stuff up to create tunes. Producers came into the game at some point, but it’s all cool, some producers create good material.

LOL … Bro, you should have just said so from the start

so you're telling me that the criteria for hip hop is rap music with loops and breaks?

an i put 'in my opinion' but its not just my opinion, ive discussed it with lots of peeps that feel the same way. but im trying not to be too agressive when discussing music so imma be chill about it.

That's cool, we can be chilled about it Bro ... I was just joking about the 'opinion' part

Man, I'm not disputing the Hip Hop Culture aspect at all ... that goes without sauying, I'm just pointing out that Hip Hop itself, which the culture was built on, is the musical style ... you can simplify it by calling it 'rap music with loops and breaks', but essentially it's a specific style of music that not just anyone can fell or create ... as with others styles of music.

Ask any veteran MC what Hip Hop essentially is and I'm pretty sure that the answer you'll mostly get is that it's the music. If this was no tthe case, then Raekwon and Ghostface Killah wouldn't have been feuding with Rza because of his other directions in musical interests that he brought into ‘8 Diagrams’.

I'm not belittling MCs at all, but they wouldn't be much of anything if it were not for the music ... Hip Hop is the sound of the culture

In all seriousness NP, whatever this Bro has got going, whatever box it gets put in, it's awesome!

I wish I had the ability or the drive, don't no which is the problem, but I wish I could just go solo ... I've become so isolated as a drummer over the years and heavily reliant on the effort that other musicians put in and of course as a drummer I always end up being an apparatus for other musician’s amusement ... it's been one bad experience after the next ... I would be so grateful if I could pull off what the Bro in this vid is doing. It's crazy, I have some cool gear ... just somehow fading away each day :(

Sorry, don't mean to moan, there are so many peeps in the world with much more serious problems ... starvation, extreme poverty, homelessness, droughts, etc ... I just have a great appreciation for what the Bro is doing in the Vid

Phew ... White Flag Brother, White Flag ... I'm not really enough of a purist when it comes to music to defend rigid categories all the way to the death ... if music is good it is good.

Guess I shouldn't have brought up the whole thing about the Flobots, I was just being ... jeez, I don't know what ... silly?

Genuine MCs are heavily talented, much respect ... I've been to venues back home where MCs from the ghettos freestyle and the skills I've witnessed are so ‘mad’ that my jaw has just hit the deck and I don't even hear the music itself
