i inoculated a rye grain jar with the cambo strain about three weeks ago and only have mycillium visible in a few random places and they are not good networks maybe a grain or two thats fully white in a cupple of random spots, i have it in an incubator at around 78 degrees. why is it taking so long? my incubator stays in the 75 to 80 degree range, humidity is at around 50-60% but i dont know how to get it higher. no contaminats which is good but its taking soo long with little results. i feel like by now my jar should be fully colinized but it looks to still be in the begining stages. does anyone have any suggestions as to what i should do or why its taking soo long?
It could be a few things. 1 - bad genetics. Sometimes people just print the wrong caps. Where did you get your spores from? 2 - low moisture content in your grain. This will make them go painfully slow. How did you prep your grain. 3 - bad luck. Patience is key in this hobby. Usually right about the time that it pisses you off, it'll start taking off. 4 - not enough spores in the jar. I always add 1 cc of spore solution, or 2-3 cc of LC. 5 - not enough gas exchange. What did you inoculate with? Was it MS or LC? If it was MS, did you scrape from a print or use a syringe? Where did you get your spores from? How did you prep your grain? Are you 100% sure that you don't have contams? Wet spot can be hard to see for a noob. As far as what you should do, my suggestion is to make a LC master jar, then use that to 'noc up a few more LCs, then use those to 'noc up grain jars. LC is an absolutely wonderful thing. Also, 75-80 isn't good. You want 78-80. Temperature fluctuations will fuck you. Wrap the incubator in a blanket (I'm assuming you use a TiT) for more insulation. This should help stabilize your temps.
got my cambodian spores from spores 101. i inoculated with a syringe 2-3cc of solution. the rye grains have no visible contams only white mycillum in a cupple spots. i have a towel over it, should i put a blanket over it? should i get a new rye grain jar? what do you mean by wet spots? i though a little mostier is ok?
that's multispore for ya. random as fuck. and cambo myc is suppost to be aggressive. sounds like bad genetics. i would keep an eye on those jars and start another batch too just incase.
That might be it. IME, Spores101 has some slow genetics. Should have used just 1 cc. Shake them, maybe? Replace the towel with a blanket. Also make sure that the blanket insulates the bottom of the incubator. Yes, and I would let that one keep going as well. Wet spot, not wet spots. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacillus No. If you see any drops in your jar, that's a bad thing. I've taken to adding a little dry verm to each one. Can you upload some pics?
Sounds to me that the jars were too wet. Depending on th method you used, the rye grain should be plump and 'dry' to the touch before PCing. Ive seen more problems from overhydrated grain then underhydrated grain.
ok thanks for the advice. im def going to start another jar but is there a chance that this jar can recover from moister and just take off at anytime? how long can mycillium live? how long should i wait before aborting that jar and starting new?
It could, but it's doubtful. I'd keep it around just in case, though. Mycellium. You can usually get 2-6 months, depending on the strain, out of mycellium in the fridge. Depends. How much grain do you have? If it's not much, keep it till it finishes or contams.
