I'm not sure if this should go here - as I'm sort of b*tching about this. I just want to know if I'm completely alone in this or if there are people who actually agree or at least know what I'm on about. I've been having a debate with my boyfriend about if it's good to just do small things closer to home. Like fair trade. I think it is good. I think it's good to help your neighbours, etc. and that if everyone did the same the world would be a better place! Obviously we'd all want a 'quick fix' and be able to change everything, make everyone equal, stop gobal-warming and preferably stop using money at all! ..But that's not going to happen... at least not over-night. You can change things one person at a time. By helping someone, who helps someone else. It really annoys me how people just do not see that that would help. It would, wouldn't it? Or is it just me being idealistic? I would want to feed everyone in the world, or go to Africa and I plan on doing a lot more charity work. But I know that there isn't just a quick fix that you can wait for (and in the mean time just be like everyone else and not give a sh*t. What does everyone think? Is it just me?
You can't aim to save the world. Do the right thing in whatever context you can, because it's right -- not to serve some greater end.
don't worry... you're not alone. just helping each other out could be simple, but people make it difficult for themselves and others by being greedy. as to how to get people to be generous though is beyond me... personally I like giving. but everyone else seems to prefer to recieve only. And hooray that you think that we shouldn't use money! that's something I don't hear often from people but I totally agree with!
I don't really literally mean save the world... not just to make myself feel better or whatever anyway. I think you're right, Zorba, by saying we should do good things anyway just because it's the right thing to do and if everyone did that the world would be a better place Just it sounds so difficult to say we want things to change, because people just want a quick fix... something to happen now. They don't want to have to work for it or do something themselves. They want it to be easy. And I'm like you, Oedipus, I like to be generous and help people out and not a lot of people do for some reason, but I think that's because we all have to fight for things, like money, jobs, property and all the rest of it I think people are generally good and if it wasn't for these sorts of things in life there would be alot more generous people
I think you're absolutely right. "Change starts within", not from some executive order that you have to follow or else be fined/jailed. How am I saving the world by not throwing my morning coffee in the street? Well, x that by a billion people, and 365 days a year. If each of those 1 billion people throw 1 piece of trash on the street a day, thats 365 billion pieces of trash a year. Same principle goes for those several thousand people who never voted because they couldn't make a difference. The power is in the individual. Don't feel powerless because you feel alone. We're nothing but trickles of rain separated by space. All seemingly insignificant on its own, all alone, but a force to be reckoned with when combined. But don't forget your power. I know what you mean tho about people not doing good things for each other. It's how society trains us. Life could be a buffet. But instead its a struggle for survival. We can send people to the moon, run places like Disney World and Las Vegas, yet we can't help out those who have nothing??? It's because people forget about love, compassion, unity, friendship. The power of uniting ourselves in thought and action towards a greater cause.
