Hi you beautiful people So I've been neglecting my hair (not brushing, just using baking soda/soap to wash it, etc etc) since around January 09. My hair made some major knottage in the back of my head and I had to keep ripping them apart... anyway the front and sides of my head were lagging behind quite a lot, so I decided to encourage them somewhat. So 4 days ago I took random clumps of hair of about the same thickness and did some tear-n-rip and backcombing on them until the resembled early dreads. The back combing I did was using a normal comb, but it seemed to work okay, even though they're not as tight as they could be, I think they'll still work. So that's the back story... what I want to ask is, now I've kinda joined the neglected dreads that were forming up at the back with some looser hair and it's got the new dready look to it, but I'm concered the back looks a bit crappy. Sooo, I'd just like some feedback now on my new dreads (I know they're not really dreads yet, but you know what I mean), and if you think I should do the ones at the back again or something, as they seem to want to lie down the side of my head, not down the back, leaving an almost bald patch at the back. Lemme know your thoughts. Also, I was thinking that the ones at the back may be too fat and if I split them up a little then they'd cover the back a little better. I do like the front and side though, and I did it all myself so I don't think I did too bad. Thoughts? -Matt Oh, and the pictures I uploaded are some of the better ones I took, my dreads don't seem to be very photogenic at the minute.
Yeah mine were loosly backcombed at the beginning with a little TnR here and there, but then i made the mistake of using wax, wihc set me back about 3 months of progress, but theyre reaaaly fuckin tight now, yours will end up the same with no fiddling or wax, good luck
Look good to me. Just leave them alone. The back will keep getting tighter so don't worry about anything.
Noice! I had the same problem with my back dreads, but after leaving them for awhile they look much better.
Thanks for the reassurance guys, figured I was bothering too much... I know my hair is very eager to dread up anyway. These are after I did the backcombing/TnR'd yeah... and I know, NO WAX... all I've been doing is a little palmrolling to try and keep the frizzys more in line with the rest, but even with that I havn't done much... figured they'd work it out on their own. Woop! Thanks for the nice comments
leave em, they look awesome! and about the comb thing, i totally think regular combs are the way to go. flea combs and shit are too hard and slow and i dont like the texture they make
I started mine in Dec '08 and they're maybe a little further than yours. I noticed that wearing a wool beenie at night and work really helped them knot up. Lookin good!
Yeah I've been wearing a beanie a lot, and I definitely think it helps. It's been getting quite hot here recently though so I had to leave it off during the day. I've a nice woolly jumper that I've wrapped around my pillow for now, for at night, as my beanie isn't totally wool, something like 50% acrylic. That's been doing wonders. They're doing pretty well... got some nice comments from people here and around. It's exciting stuff!
