I am just so excited about what happened yesterday I had to share my experience! I am an avid animal rescuer and yesterday I just happened to be outside work smoking a cig and I saw a small rat terrier running in the road. I called him over to me and he came right over. He was just sooooo sweet! The neighbors said he'd been running the streets for days. I tried my best to keep him but with 3 crazy dogs already it just wasn't an option. I went across the street with him in my arms to buy him some chicken and right then a girl around my age was going into the same cafe. I just took a chance and asked her if she wanted a dog. She said YES! So about 10 minutes later she came over and put him in her car and took him to his new home. I love when things like that happen:)

Um... so you didn't even REPORT him to your local shelter?

NOT cool. Just because he's been running for three days doesn't mean there's not somone looking for him. Seriously. For all you know, he has a frantic owner out there who is papering an area but hasn't been looking far enough afield.

I have to say I agree...and what did you know about this person you gave the dog to exactly? What did you know of the home that was waiting? We all like to think we have good judgement, but it was a gamble

I know you wanted to do a good thing and you were probably in a rush, but there would have been better ways for the little dog. I don't want to worry you, but it doesn't sound like you know where it'll end up

Actually I spoke with her for a long time about the dog and his care. She is going to contact the shelters in the area and report him. I gave him to her because I could not take him home and she could care for him in a loving home unless he is claimed. Our local shelter is way overpopulated and has a super high euthanasia rate....not to mention I live in a small town and our shelter isnt the best. Atleast he will have a warm place to stay whether he is claimed or she decides to keep him. I'd never just hand a precious dog over to just anyone.

It's less that and more that he's been removed from the area where someone is presumably looking for him.

When I volunteered for Sibe rescue, we got a dog in (this was in the days that microchips weren't well known) who had been transported almost a thousand miles by a 'good samaritin' who found the dog at a truck stop. We did eventually find his original owner, but it took months and some REAL luck- I took flyers to the original truckstop when I was on vacation on the off chance that his owners were still looking, and it turned out that his owners lived on the same street and had never quit looking.

Well, where I found him was in a business area. Not any homes near by and he was VERY thin. I had no way of taking him to the shelter myself and I certainly was not going to put him back out on the street. I did what I thought was best for the pup. I live in a small town and around here people just dump dogs and cats on the street all the time.

You dod the right thing, good job,at least the dog has a nice warm dry place to sleep and will get some food.Sometimes you have to improvise to the situation as luck would have it.A rescue on the fly:cheers2:

one of my dogs was being passed from place to place, everyone gave him away, the first morning I had him I got up and he had eaten the sofa! I started taking him out for a good run and long walk everyday, it did the trick, he was bored, I spent alot of time with him, now hes great, one of the previous owners only ask for him back a while ago, can you believe that?
