    ... is absolutely terrible!!
I don't understand, I am very flexible for genres of music, i can accept and admire the artistic quality in all of them...
but her voice literally makes me want to put my hands over my ears and scream,
My favorite genre of music is Folk too. I like her harp playing, But thats it!!

I just don't understand, does anybody else feel this way???

If you don't, tell me what you love about her. In all honesty, I would like to know. So I can force myself to be a little more appreciative of that horrific voice.

Her voice is pretty damn squeaky, no doubt about it... However, I do like her quite a bit. I originally heard her when she opened at a Bjork concert in 2007. I couldn't stand her music, and I couldn't wait until her set was over.
In recent years, I've started to really appreciate her. I listened to her album 'Ys' and it has a really beautiful depth to it. The harp is gorgeous, the lyrics are epic, and even her voice has a bit of a whimsical energy to it. I don't love her voice as much as other "unusual" singers like Bjork, but I do like it for what it is. It's unique!

I'm with the OP on this one; JN's 'singing' is the sound of the privileged and petulant.

I agree she is very unique.
I think I just haven't listened enough to her music to understand the "whimsical" quality you speak of.
Saying that, I do enjoy her harp playing alot!!

Say WHAT? Joanna Newsom is one of my absolute favorites. Amazing harp player, unique lyrics, unique voice, completely original sound. Her voice is all part of that. I absolutely fell in love with it the first time I heard it. Her music would not be what it is without the voice. It's not for everyone, though, I guess.

Joanna Newsom is marvelous, I think. I love "Ys", it is one of those albums that you can just sit down and listen to and let it take you away! Also I am quite fond of and impressed by her lyrics.

I clicked on this thread with the expectation of rave reviews...although im not that surprised there are people out there who arent convinced yet. A friend recommended her in 2004...i gave The Milk-Eyed Mender a quick listen and decided it was far too obscure to listen to with any conviction. Her voice made me feel a little uncomfortable. It wasnt until quite a few years later that my iTunes was on shuffle that i came round to the idea...and now i think she's just fantastic!
I agree, Ys is a good album, but i prefer Milk-Eyed Mender. This Side of the Blue is one of the most beautiful songs ive ever heard, and i adore Sprout and the Bean.
She's definitely worth a listen, even just out of curiosity
