Our planet has a finite amount of time that it will be around, it always has and always will. As far as the human race our future is not so clear. On one hand we may nuke ourselves along with teh rest of life off the face of the planet, on the other hand the development of technology is one gift that our predacessors have left us and our utilization/advancment is the only hope we have for surviving(especially given our increasingly rapid destruction of the enviroment over the last 100 years). At the forfront of these technologies is the internet. Although the internet does not directly effect the physical world it is the best hope for the development of technologies that can help us to better work WITH the enviroment to prolong the livability of our planet and the eventual migration to space.(most definantly a long way off) Instantainiously transmitting information from anywhere on the planet to anywhere through the internet allows for immediate collaboration with peers of every field of science, industry, govenment, pretty much everything allows for the building of ideas upon eachother to happen much faster than before the era of the internet and as follows we can advance our knowledge and technology as a species to do amazing things that no other lifeform has accomplished.

    To rephrase:
The planet has always had a finite amount of time to exist and nothing we can do can will make the planet exist forever.

Mother Earth will be here long after we have ceased to inhabit her.

The universe is infinite, even if we and our little blue planet are not.

so what exactly is the point of this post? The internet....even though I use it, I would not miss it if it was gone. Remember the days when people did things outside because 'social networking' didn't exist yet....those were the days

It's just an interesting avenue of thought, at least to me. The internet is a powerful tool and it can be used to further ourselves globaly.(not that the universe was ever at stake)

I am vehemently opposed to internet telepathy chips, which you seem to be hinting at!

I agree whole heartedly that "internet telepathy chips" should be left out of the question entirely but using the internet as an OPTIONAL collaberative tool to further science and technology in hopefully eco-friendly ways is a possibility.(all-though no one here seems to view it that way)

And the main point of my original post was to try and inspire all of these forward looking hippies to learn about and utilize technology for the purpose of bettering ourselves AND living lighter on mother earth, but that message seems to have gotten lost in the tubes.

That would be my mistake then, I was thinking I was talking to hippies on the internet like myself. And you should look at some of your fellow brethren on hip forums as there are most certainly hippies and non-hippies.

"Hippy is an establishment label for a profound, invisible, underground, evolutionary process. For every visible hippy, barefoot, beflowered, beaded, there are a thousand invisible members of the turned-on underground. Persons whose lives are tuned in to their inner vision, who are dropping out of the TV comedy of American Life."

I would agree. We depend too much on technology and the internet. We are loosing touch with humanity and live in artificial worlds. How long until we can download our brains onto the internet and literally live in the internet? What kind of psychological implications is the internet causing on humanity?

Higher power has got more balls to blow the planet than people with nukes, and do it better wise by wisdom strategy.

brain internet chips are pretty scary-especially incorporating advertising, corporate influence and hacking. there would be no filter for the information that is "out-there" and what we let in.

resulting in no freedom of choice. our thoughts would not be our own. just a data set

Why does anyone think I'm talking about becoming computer chipped internet mind zombies??? I was just talking about the possibility of super efficient communication making the world a better place in a world that seemed to be heading down a dark path.
I am in no way implying about, supporting, suggesting or even talking about putting computer chips in peoples heads atleast until now..

Since so many on this thread seem to want to talk about brain chips ok, I'll shoot. This is what I've found so far on this abomination of technology.

Here are 3 links to look at for yourselves since you like the topic so much
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Growing rat neurons on a computer chip..

This discusses the theory of fusing a silicon chip to a set of neurons..aka"the brain chip"
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Here are three things that I found that sound legit, (creepy but legit). I'm not a brain scientist, I'm not a chip designer, and personally I think this is one of the worst ideas since the creations of the atom bomb(maybe worse).
