Do you need a special program to unpack these files?
I downloaded some music, and it was in .rar format, but I have no idea how to decompress it.
Or am I just completely confused?
Anyone know anything about these kind of files?

Go to 7zip, download it, use it to extract the rar.

use winrar...it replaces winzip and does all same things as winzip...if you get a cracked version make sure its a corporate one and you shouldn't have any trouble at all

when I have .rars I just make sure they are all in the same area and right click the 1st file ...then choose to unrar it and it does all the others automatically

    7zip also does this.

There's loads of options for all of your file compression and extraction needs. I don't know anyone who uses Winzip any more.

cracked version of winrar, you don't even need that. If you can click past a notice that says it's an unregistered copy. it'll pack and unpack all kinds of stuff for ya. Great peice of software.

I'm going to pretend I didn't see that.

    7zip FTW.

I'm a Winrar lover. :) It's always done the job well for me. Much better than even Winzip.

Well.. that's because it's better than Winzip =P
Winzip is quite old in comparison.
Winrar is slower but has much better compression than Winzip.
7zip is supposed to be faster and have better compression, but all the comparisons I've read, they've come pretty close. Any I've done myself, WinRar won. Plus, WinRar has a file type or two more it can open =P

But compression and multimedia don't go well together and that's all I ever really have interest in compressing, so that's all I'm looking at =P

Gotta say, though, I have come across filetypes that neither 7zip nor WinRAR could open. LHA files, for instance (these tend to be used in Japan, according to Wikipedia). For those, I use IZArc.

I've only come across one, and that was when I was installing some freeware Japanese game. I think it was Silver Knights.

when I woke up this morning, I didn't think I'd be discussing obscure file compression types on a purple forum
