After experiencing chronic digestive problems for years, I went to the doctor the other day and found out I was lactose intolerant. Unfortunately, like almost everyone else I loooove cheese and butter and yogurt. Margarine is just as acceptable, Tofutti Better Than Cream Cheese was awesome, and soy yogurt is not bad, but I'm so pissed off about soy cheese.

I was excited about all the different varieties of soy cheese I found at Central Market and Whole Foods so I bought two to try. Thought it'd be just like being a regular vegetarian and not a vegan. The first one tasted like an artificially flavored cheddar sponge and the second one was so disgusting that I thought it had gone bad, though the expiration date was six months in the future. I literally gagged a little swallowing it.

Has anyone found a good soy cheese, or is that just one of the shitty sides of lactose intolerance? Is good soy cheese a myth?

I didn't like it much at first either, but eventually found one I could dig. I used to use a type called Soy King (I think??) and it had herbs mixed in with it. soy cheese can't be used *exactly* the same way regular cheese is. ie. you can't just put it in a sandwich or eat it straight. It's best melted on toast, pasta, nachos and stuff like that. But anyways, I've stopped using it for now because i realised it has lactic acid in it, and I wont use it until I find out whether it's synthetic or animal derived. same goes with soy yogurt. alot of soy stuff isn't even really vegan! it sucks!

B'sides. it's really not. that. hard. to live without cheese. it's a small sacrifice if u ask me :H

I've never tried it because it isn't carried where I live, but I have heard good things about Follow Your Heart brand Vegan cheese, so you might want to try that one out.

Also, most soy cheeses that contain casein (a milk protein) are more "cheese-like." Personally, I'm allergic to all of milk's components (whey, casein, lactose) and wouldn't eat it anyway, since I'm Vegan. But if your only concern is lactose intolerance, then the soy products containing casein are decent substitutes.

If you can't find an acceptable sub., you might want to consider going off it cold turkey. I used to be a huge cheese lover, and, for me, after 60 days, I couldn't stand the smell of the stuff. Avocados are good for cheese cravings.

My Mum and brother are off dairy, so they have mozzarella, goats cheese and other kinds without cows milk.

Would those be okay for you to eat?

errr aint goats milk still dairy??? and i thought mozzerella is still made with milk. maybe im wrong.

if ya in england, best cheese sub ive had is the new melting cheezly stuff, ive only tried the mozzerella stlye. the stuff that dont melt is pretty nasty i thought, but the melting stuff on a vegan burger is well nice, even on its own its not bad which is sayin summin for vegan cheese. toffuti cream cheese is cheap and really nice, its not the same as philidelphia but its just as good, i promise, you wouldnt know its not dairy
