I washed them today using knottyboy shampoo bar and i had a nylon stocking on but the roots still feel greasy. I was wondering what i did wrong or what i should do next time to make the roots be clean again.

I think the general consensus is knottyboy shampoo isnt that good, also nylon stocking seems to be a ridiculous concept, try using baking soda. lastly itll take a while for your scalp to adapt and stop getting so greasy so quickly

and I think I did my helpful reply of the month

Personally I love Knotty Boy shampoo... not sure why people are so down on it. Anyway, the nylon stocking sounds kind of weird and uncomfortable.

I used the knotty boy bar when I first got my dreads and my dreads always felt "gummy" or sticky after using it. I didn't like it one bit. :(

I deeply believe that washing locs is no different than washing normal hair, except in the VERY beginning before they're locked up.. then you might want to be a little bit gentle so you don't unravel them. I really like pantene clarifying shampoo, but i imagine any brand that billed itself as clarifying would do the trick. The key is you want it to not leave any kind of residue on your hair. Oh and yea, nylon stockings go on your legs, not your head silly.

How long have you had dreads? how often do you wash?

oh yea, I too tried a shampoo JUST for dreds once... like everyone else, it didn't make my hair feel clean at all. I still have the bottle, its utter crap.

I've only had them for a week and this is the first time i've washed them.
I've read to put a nylon stocking on them the first couple of times so they don't unravel but it did sound a little weird.
Thanks for the help by the way

I think the whole stocking thing is just to maintain the illusion that backcombed hair + wax = dreads, and it wouldn't look too good to have it all fall the fuck out the second you stepped in the shower.

Your hair isn't going to spontaneously unknot, well at least not unless your prepared to take bets on the lifespan of the universe and sit it out, so I'd lose the stocking.

please take a picture with the stocking on your head and post it here before you get rid of it.

I tried the stocking thing once, I didn't feel like it allowed me to adequately scrub my scalp and haven't done it since. The baking soda really helped me though.

My dreadlings are still only a few weeks old, so I've been more gentle washing them than my combed hair. I just get my hair wet in the shower, turn the water off, wash gentle with baking soda, rinse gently.

I also find that ringing them out with a couple paper towels really sucks out the water and cuts back on the drying time.

Anyway, I just wash my dreads with water at the moment, i've got some bronners but I figured I wont use it till my dreads lock up better or i'll only use it if I get any bad dread problems

Yes. It is. I could lie and say it was a handle I'd been using for years, but obviously you've found me out. I lurk these forums and copied your username because I want to be just like you when I grow up. That's cool, right?
