I had an idea ^^ When reading this site that a member posted a while ago: http://nofolete.blogspot.com/2007/03/felting-human-hair.html I wondered if it was possible to felt a dread on your head... Like this: http://www.knitting-and.com/crafts/felted-dreadlocks.htm But on your head!! I used the same methods as the above links, and this is what I got (see attached picture). The bit I felted is the bit under the loopy, the blonder bit. I had a bit of bone straight hair there I play with, but since I've found a new bit of hair to play with, I thought I'd use the old play bit as this experiment This will be the progress thread for the little guy, I just wanna see if it works 1) better than other methods of dreading 2) if at all!!
Absolutely, you can felt your dreads. I was into felting wool, then suddenly had the idea to felt my dreads, especially the ones that were staying loose for a long time. It works and it works well. That said, I wouldn't do too, too much hair felting, because the felting does damage the hair to the point at which it breaks sometimes. Also, the spots that I felted dreaded very well, but they are rock-hard, almost like wire. I reserve felting for just a few eternally loose pieces that I want to work into an already-present dread. Keep your awareness when felting your own hair - I've stabbed my finger with the felting needle and, OW, does that hurt. It's easy to misjudge where your felting and hit your finger instead of your hair.
Washed my dreads with water last night, and the little guy has survived his first tidal wave ^^ Sister rags, thanks! I didn't use a felting needle for this. I also am into felting wool, into purses and dreads and stuff, but never used a felting needle The only time I did use one, was for the the blue felt dread on my head. I attached it with the felting needle and boy is it stuck for good ^^ For this experiment I just used soap and elbow grease
wow this was interesting to look at! i've felted wool before, but i never used a felting needle, i just throw the wool in the washer on hot. so i didn't know what you were doing to your head
So basically you palm rolled it a lot after a shower? I don't get how what you did is different than palm rolling, if you didn't use a felting needle.
What crafts have you gusy used felting for? I just looked up some youtube videos and I think it may in fact be a craft I could do. Anything I could do as a novice to give as christmas gifts? Any sites you use?
Its exactly like in the dread felting link. I got a bit of hair, scrunched it and pulled it around a bit, put a bit of soap + water on it and sorta palm rolled in circles.. If that makes sense Daisy, I'm like the great old William Morris.. I want to master every craft out there xD I Sew, I felt, I do ceramics, I do glass, I make jewellery, I've done woodworking, I want to get into weaving and rugs and stuff, but I don't have enough fabric I forget what else but my 'craft' bag is bulging xD
Hehe xD I made dreads, and I've done some rectangles that are waiting to be made into purses you can make bags and stuff too if you've got enough wool. Hats and stuff are quite cool, and I've got an idea of how to make them but I don't think the felt would work very well as a hat
The coolest thing I've seen felted are animals. Some people make bowls and stuff. You can felt balls that are Christmas colors for ornaments. Here is a link of the animals. Felt Animal Also anyone here like you dragonvine and daisy should check out this site: http://www.craftster.org/ They have all kinds of crafts, woodworking, glass, felt, knit/crochet, houseware, sewing, and a whole bunch more.
Updaaaate, little dread is doing weeell. Hasn't fallen out, like BCed ones would have by now Is as stable as it was when I made it ^^
When I did my extensions recently, I used a felting needle to attach them... works well, but you can't stay in the same spot too long or do it too much because it breaks hairs and eventually will break off. its good in moderation. I used a combination of felting and sewing with single strands of hair that I threaded through a needle. Broke 3 felting needles in the process (damn those things are fragile) but its been about 3 weeks now and they're all still in, there's maybe one or two that I'm gonna go back and fix that have thin spots where they were attached but all of the other ones are doing well.
