Well, In about a year i'll be heading over to the UK for a visit and I was just wondering what do you guys across the pond think of American accents? I LOVE nearly all accents from the UK and find them so interesting, I could listen to someone talk for hours and enjoy every minute of it, lol. So I was just curious to see your side of the story.
Depends what region you're talking about, though I can't think of an American accent I don't like. Maybe the very heavy southern accents, though they're great if there's just a touch of the accent there. That said, I think most people are neutral/not that bothered by US accents as a whole. We tend to hear them a lot in popular culture, so it's not as rare as, say, the raven haired blue eyed lass with the Irish accent that made me go weak at the knees halfway up an escalator in Leeds a couple of years back. I'm curious, though...which British accents do you not like?
Depends where in America they're from. I love southern accents, so I reckon you'll be fine. New York accents are also pretty cool. Valley Girl is very annoying however, and after watching Fargo, I can't say I care too much for Minnesota Nice. Oh yaaaaar? Yaaaaar!
cannae stand a single bloody american accent a must say, just doesnae fit in wi me if ye ken fit a mean
Translation: I have to say Gents, the accent sported by you foreign Jonnies from the Colonies is really dashed decent, quite remarkably sophisticated and an indubitable sign of eloquence and erudition. Jolly good, what? PS. I like shortbread
Hmmm, I'm not so sure what all that meant either, after I wake up and read it again I prolly won't like it, Shotbread eh? how do ya feel about Grits ?? Peace
I like southern accents. But I'm from the north: People are forever telling me I sound like I have a very bad cold. This is not good -- especially during a poetry reading. Sadly, I do not sound like Dylan Thomas. I can only wish... --QP
The American accent i think is fantastic! and my daughter thinks so too as she is always trying to talk american hehe Hope your stay over here is a good one alyssajewel.
I like American Southern Accents, but thats more or less it. The others I don't dislike, but I don't particuarly like them either. It also really annoys me the amount of British kids these days who use American slang I tried explaining to my friends that an 'ass' is a donkey and that an 'arse' is the correct spelling. I also hear lots of 'awsomes', 'trash' and 'garbage' and other such words. I even hear the occasional 'dude' (Which, interesting fact for you people, is actually the scientific name for a Camels Penis)
We like to spell things wrong just to irritate, and know it or not if someone called you a dude it WAS just a polite way of calling you a camel dick.. We're very proper ya know.. Peace
