Liberation Theology. That's one major reason that unites the entire continent - it links hundreds of thousands of communities and societies together under one philosophy. There is a Catholic Social Thought/Teaching movement in the Latin American countries that support capitalism awareness and a self-reliance, self-determination approach to restructuring their governments is taking place. You can check it out here - notice a few Latin American names or two? : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberation_theology
It should be pointed out that the Left in Latin America is not monolithic in their governence, economic policies and their results. The left of Chile's Michelle Bachelet and Brazil's Lula are not the same as that of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela.
Is there any difference between today's left-wing and the Latin American leftist movements during the 1960s and 1970s??[/QUOTE]
