I wouldn't go any further north than Wrightsville. You would find Figure 8 and Topsail to be dull.

Topsail and figure 8 are quite spendy. wrightsville is a really cool town, quite young, very fit, nice beaches. Carolina beach is basically a frat party all summer, you can drive and camp on the beach.
The box is much more laid back. Great surf fishing, camping on the sand, wild horses. Can get really pricey.
I've long thought about wirghtsville, we have an office there but I work 2 hours awe at the other office.

You will need deep pockets if Wrightsville is your choice. I lived in the area for many years. Lots of service related jobs, but not much more, and cost of living on Wrightsville is out of sight. I don't know of many homes for sale under a million, lots when I lived there, if you could find one would be over $600,000. I won't go into parking because there is not any. Fig eight is a private beach just north of Wrightsville, and again you need real deep pockets. I have heard of homes on Topsail in the 500,000 range these days. have not been to see if it is true.

We were going to move to Wilmington last year but decided against it because of the high crime rate and traffic (my husband drives a lot for his job). I am sure like most beaches they probably have a bunch of small dives for music, I know the town is really big on art and theatre. As far as larger venues, I believe the closest ones are Raleigh, at least that is all I could find because that was another issue I had, I live near a lot of large venues and can see different concerts all over the place. If you move down there, you should update and let us know how it goes.
