Oh yeah. If the society is going to become "more caring" like you put it, it would do well to hurry up a bit, you know. If it IS going to save the world, today is just the time!
Because "saving" is no exaggeration, you know, what with this global warming, for one thing. The other one is pollution nobody today has the power to stop -- because there is NO control over productions and all they care is bucks, firstly and lastly. And mother-nature, you know, is just failing to cope with the superior power of human knowledge and intellect. Do you actually understand the hopelessness of this situation? When you actually do, then you will be mu-u-u-ch less skeptical about "some god" doing what humans JUST CAN'T.

And yes, you ARE naive about it all. It's not about "giving up" on human society. It is about being able to fairly judge about what "the society" can and what it cannot do.
Optimism is not the same as a misplaced hope. You picture "the society" as some entity, that has coped with many problems successfully throughout history and, sure thing, will come out winner in the end of it. Just take a look back in history, is this true??? Don't be afraid to see the TRUTH, if you don't want to be "naive".

OK, maybe my response was a bit harsh. But your sincere question calls for a sincere answer, too.

yes society over the years has pulled it self out of many terrible dark places in history so i do think that people as a whole are good and just if they were just led to the right path of course it would be up to the people to take that path and make the changes that this planet so despertly needs. Still unsure how i'm naive in all this by my outlook on all this but then again i dont care becuse you sir are a ney sayer and i just dont have time for negative thinking.

Yes it did. Do you remember how? Can these mechanisms work against today's crisis? The situation is different today.
Can you give me at least one historical example, when people agreed to be led to the right course? When they would not rather turn to the sure path of selfishness. Well in the former centuries there was enough space on earth and not enough strength in the hand of the "society". This is not so any more, they have to face the direct results of their activities. Even then they prefer to blame it on the government, but themselves are not ready to change their own values. How insincere!

Humans have won the progress -- only to see how unhappy they are. They are turning to the old forgotten gods and religions, which people long ago forgot, looking for better advisors. Just look how various sorts of magic flourish today! Why do you think? Today, when education has become available as it has been never before! Just think about it.

So, naturally, at my age of 43 I call it naive to cherish any sort of positivism without ever giving a thought to the facts like these. Not the positivism itself is naive, but ignorant positivism is naive. The one based only on sweet tails about the mighty humankind; tails, created by evolutionists and atheists. They don't care much about HOW their evolution thingy really came about; neither do they really care about the question HOW this humankind will overcome the disaster. If they did care enough, they would drop their atheistic mythology.

i think the thing to bear in mind is that all of us togather create the conditions each of us individually experience. that we do this by a statistical mechanism. so that no one of, alone has that much effect on it, other then by the infuence of our example.

and yet and yet, yes decision made at decision making levels do play a tangible roll.
and yet and yet, are still part of the same mechanism, in that the incentives that motivate them, again come from the statistical combining of what all of us actually do, often reguardless of what we tell ourselves our intentions might happen to be.

so it's not like it can't be done. it can. but it takes a deeper understanding then either belief or intentions. that is to do anything about it intentionally.

unintionally, this statistcal maze sometime does wonderfully unexpected things, which leads many, myself included, to believe there may be grater players then ourselves involved. players for the most part, with good intentions as well.

i does take an understanding of the social dynamic, and an amazing degree of self dicipline to 'play' it. it also takes a bit of charismatic tallent. few who are strong in one of those areas are ever quite as much so in the other two. but it can happen.

i would suggest not limiting oneself to persuit of understanding the social dynamic, but also the mechanism of things outside of human society as well. because many of the conflicts arise from ignoring nature and human society's interaction with it.

societies/cultures, tangible physical infrastructure, and environmental nature, all interact, and the actual details of this interaction need to be understood, a big job, in and of itself, and then that understanding acted upon, which may often require interacting with the very mechanism of how human society works as well.

of course without knowing ALL of that, it might still be possible to set an effective positive example. this latter is what we can all do, or most of us, each in our own ways as best we can.

what i dont understand aguest is how you can be such a pessimist and still call yourself a hippie. I just think that if everyone for one day did something to help be it pick up any trash they see or help someone out that is in need then that might be all the change that is needed to help put this planet ney society back on track or at least a different track than the one we're on now. But it needs to happen soon no more of this bullshit talk its time to do.

I'm not calling myself a hippie, although I used to in the past.
I just have a simple reason. I think, in order to be able to name the solution to the problems of humankind, one needs, in addition to optimism (which is a good thing), know the real cause of what is going on.
Can you mention the real cause? Know what happened and when?... And without such knowledge, how can you be sure that your solution is anything else but a dream? I know it all sounds great, "if everyone for one day... etc". Yet why haven't they done so? With this idea being SO simple and SO appealing? Well I think there is a reason why, and unless we know it, we can hardly be sure we know the cure. Just this.

a wise man once said..."Be the Change you wish to See"
Any change that does not come from within does not have the energy to maintain and the flexibility to Change with Awareness in turn.

Everyone does what they can. "Think globally, act locally" is more than just a bumper sticker ... it works. If you are a great leader like Mother Theresa or Abraham Lincoln, that's wonderful ... but even if you're not, you can still do good things for the world.

I'm a good example. I'm certainly not especially smart or charismatic or visionary, but I have made a difference, even if just a little, in the lives of many, many young children who desperately needed it. It's my dream that those kids will go forth and spread the same message of love and grace in their own lives. In time, the message can fill the world, if it's given a chance.

As for what you can do, choose something that matters to you, whether it's the environment or world hunger or wanting to prevent war. Whatever it is, choose something that means a lot to you personally. Find an organization that's involved in it, and see what they need you to do. It's that simple.

Even if you do nothing but help out in the office, that's better than nothing. And it's a start. You will be learning about the cause and gaining experience. You can make a difference.

I wish you the very best. Don't give up. The world needs you :)

Yes, that is true. Always has been -- with regard to a PERSON and personal efforts and attitudes. Good point to keep going, to develop positive attitude, to achieve SOME results...

Yet, what about changing THE WORLD? I mean the world, not one's life, not the life of a group of people, but the whole WORLD?
You know, just with all these truths being so appealing, "if every single one could do just one little thing... etc", yes, with the truth being SO obvious and SO appealing -- why is the world yet changing from bad to worse??? Just WHY is it SO difficult for the people to follow what seems right, what they KNOW is right? Why so difficult to abandon what they KNOW is bad??...

Now the author of this site, Skip, has brought out in his introduction to hippies, that there is such thing as "the system". He maintains it, that being a hippie means an organized effort to break free from that very "system". In the context of this idea, "green" things are the things, which are supposed to help to break free, which are themselves "undefiled" by "the system".
OK, the idea about a "system" is not new. Jesus mentioned "the world", of which he told he was "no part". He tells that every now and then in the Gospels, you can easily find it there. He also wanted his disciples to be "no part" of "the world".

I guess, the question one needs to consider is:"Can THE SYSTEM be changed?" Or, alternatively, can the WORLD be changed for the better, while THE SYSTEM is here?
Obviously, then, THE SYSTEM is a power. It is a conscious effort supported by power; if it wasn't so, it WOULD NOT be SO difficult to withstand this SYSTEM. It would not be difficult for individuals to do what is right, nor for humankind to break free in one united effort... It being as it is, though, we see that there is a POWER behind this SYSTEM.

So can you tell me, WHICH power is there behind this wicked SYSTEM? If you don't know the answer, then you have no clue as to how the world can be changed for the better. I'm afraid, without that answer even our personal efforts can be deceptive.

This is why I accept the answer the Bible gives me:"The world is lying in the power of THE WICKED ONE". It also says WHY the Creator allowed this to happen and what we need to do to be able to once see the changed world. I find all this very reasonable; but of course, following this teaching I can't be called a "hippie". Hippies believe that humans can make it in a united effort; I don't believe it. In our pride we are tending to believe anything about our "mightiness". Yet in our humiliation we realize, how weak we actually are. But if that awareness doesn't kill all hope, I find it reasonable to follow the one, which looks most reasonable. And for me that's the one I find in the Bible.

Rebelling against the system doesnt seem to make much progress when ppl are afraid to lose what they have worked so hard for just to sustain their families.. We cannot sit and throw rocks at the system and expect it to change itself. We have to change it from within itself. We have to save our constitution, our rights as tax paying citizens.

We hire the government officals by voting them in office or not getting out to vote.. the ones not voting, please sit down. You inaction is part of the problem and you have no voice. If you did not care enough to vote, why do you scream and gnash your teeth in displeasure, you had a change to make a difference but you chose to sit idlely by and do nothing.

For the ones that did/do vote, unity is they only way to make changes. We have to come to a consences as to what we want out of our government and stick by it.. We aint paying enough attention to what/who is handling our affairs.

We need to start using our intellect instead of brute force. We need to stop sitting on the sidelines letting someone else mind the store.. we dont even check in to see if all the money is in the till. We dont want to do it ourselves so we let someone else do it.. so they are robing us blind, well, I dont want to have to do something about it, maybe that group over there will say something, I dont want to make waves, you know, I really dont have the time.. but I do wish I could do more to help.. I have a family and I dont want to lose my job or my home bc I made a fuss.

You can always 'drop out' or drop in. Ppl's consciousness level is evolving.. only when we evolve away from greed and corruption will we have equality and harmony within our own conscience.

It starts with thinking in the NOW. We can remember the past and learn from it, but not let it get stuck in our own heads and become lost in it, it's gone and but a memory. We can hope for a brighter future but cannot project ourselves there bc it has not occured yet and is not relavent in the now.

I suppose my contribution to making a diifference is planting fruit trees on my farm and on the roadside, along with berries and flowers that seed and feed, they will be here long after I am gone, to bring nurishment to human and creature. To grow our own food, as much as we can and to recycle when possible. To help our neighbors if there is a need and to be humble in our hearts and thankful for what we do have.

Ppl need to care more, or more ppl need to care.

    Blessings
    sh

Yes, sure. If we aren't doing the best we can to contribute to the solution of the problems, then why complain?

On the other hand, people who do spend themselves in doing what is right have no reason to complain about what other people do/don't do. After all, it is everyone's personal responsibility to make sure, that what he's doing REALLY does make sense. But once the decision made, it is a matter of manhood and faith to go ahead looking in front with positive attitude: really, you have studied the matter and found the right way to go. Now go ahead and view the obstacles as stepping stones, blessings etc...

Yet life is not that simple, of course. While struggling with such obstacles as one meets on his way of faith, trying to keep good faith and positive attitude at the same time, one has more than one opportunity to confirm, or otherwise to review, his original decision regarding "the right way to go". After all, knowledge and wisdom are acquired while threading the path.
And so, it may happen, that this wisdom and knowledge you acquired will open your eyes to the fact, that you're going wrong way. In such situation some would reject such acquired knowledge and wisdom for the sake of their original decision:"I have committed myself to it and I won't betray." Then there are others, who reason differently:"I have committed myself to DOING WHAT IS RIGHT. But my idea of "what was right" was much influenced by (inherited) wrong views of other people (whose motives I didn't care to check) and my general lack of life experience. So I'm still IN for doing what is right, but I will let wisdom direct me on the way. I'm ready to change."

...After all, the noble task "to change the world" is no trifling matter, right? While it is very noble and courageous to dedicate one's life to such tremendous task (people will sure say you're an idiot ;-)), is it not reasonable to put forth ALL effort to make sure, that you're on the right way? Of course, we start with "something" -- something, which seems right at the moment. But one can hardly expect to possess a complete comprehension of the problem, if he's, say 18 years old. Or, 25? Well, I know people who changed their mind even at 90!

So-o-o... What I mean to say is, we need to be busy doing what is right, but along with that a continuous research is needed. We must be continuously verifying, that we are going the right way. Otherwise, this world may not give way under our pressure to change it, and this may become a cause of continuous disappointment and loss of enthusiasm. And rightly so, as this 3000 years old piece of wisdom says:"There exists a way, that is upright before a man, but the ways of death are at the end of it afterward."

Hmmm what happened and when? Well we were born into this realm which is of a dual nature. This Earthly realm has tides of good and evil that swirl around like waves in the sea. The beauty of our reality here on Earth is that we are able to burn up our Karmic debt by being virtuous, doing good deed,I believe that we... as eternal souls... chose to come here to this realm to raise our levels. To release ourselves from Karma and gain in Virtue. The Earth will always have trials and tribulations. the forces who run things are very very old. I think that the best way to overcome is to heal everything possible that we come into contact with. It is the fact that we are able to suffer that enables us to feel new levels of joy and strength. Let us be virtuous souls and help the rest of humanity to wake up and see their divine nature...:)

i think changing da world start first with changing ourselves within and project that outwards toward the rest of da human race... .just doing anything good for others~ even the most minimal things u do can change the world one person at a time !!
