See, this is where people are a little confused. George W. Bush is not stupid. He is a highly educated rich kid. This "common, simple-minded cowboy" image has been fooling everyone. It's a sham.

Bush is plenty smart... and that is what's scary.

I never mentioned myself or my desires I was purely asking you why you regard 'being something' as so important or as a measure of success in this life.
you insinuate that if you don't 'be something' then you are a failure or as you put it, better off dead. Which is simply not true. You can live a good life and make a change to the world without 'being something' That is a concept that many of us here believe and understand.

And just what actions are these? Why should young people have to either fight and kill and die or rot in jail, when they did nothing to deserve to be put in that position in the first place?

Exactly. Anyone with a brain wouldn't believe a word that this administration says.

Being something is the opposite of being nothing. Yes, being nothing is a failure.

They shouldn't, ideally, which is why I would not run off to Canada and abandon my peers in the US who may not be able to afford to leave. My actions that I would be taking responsibility for would be dodging the draft, which, although not wrong in my opinion, would still be against the law. Laws are not always morally correct, as evidenced by slavery once being legal here. If I had lived back then, I would probably have helped with the abolition movement, and if I went to jail for it, then I would go to jail for it. Running away to Canada is not going to change the law--going to jail and making the government pay your room and board would have a stronger effect.

funny you should ask. i heard about this too. the house bill ref # is H.R. 163 and there is a mirror bill in the senate. however, after writing my representative and asking him about it, i doubt we have much to fear. it was defeated 10-5-04 in a vote of 2 - 402. even the guy who wrote it opposed it.
i'm still keeping an eye on it, but somehow, i kinda doubt they'll resurrect it. the bill is worded in such a way that it would require two years of service from men AND women ages 18 to 26. if you're in college, you'd get to finish the semester (if i remember correctly) and then you'd have to go. somehow, i don't see many rich republicans (like the ones cureently in controll of 2 out of three branches of the federal government.... .aaaaaarrrrrrgggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh) sending their sons and daughters off to war. and this bill doesn't give too many ways out. still tho, like i said, i'm keeping an eye on it. might not hurt if others were too.

ex-military friend of mine said if there is the restatement of the draft it will not happen for another year or 2.
