Alright, I just tripped this weekend, and I came up with an interesting theory about what exactly acid is, or to give a better description, what it does to your brain. If you read my trip report, I mention this in there, but thought that it deserved its own thread :D.

So, when I'm tripping, I always feel like I'm entering a more primal state of being. I feel like if somebody tells me to do something, or if I tell myself to do something that I know is pretty important (find a friend, get a glass of water, make my way back home etc), that will become the sole focus of my attention. At the same time, I feel like I've sort of fast forwarded my evolution in that I can communicate on the meta-physical level. It's gotten to the point (while tripping of course) where my friends and I know exactly what the other person is going to say purely because of their reaction to an event or their facial expression.

Here's my theory, what if it's both? I feel like when I'm tripping, and I have to do something important, it becomes the focus of my attention, but at the same time, I can still think about tons of different things and have conversations. It's almost as if my brain has told my body to do this certain thing and my body goes on auto-pilot to do it so my brain doesn't have to constantly be telling my body to do the task. I realize that this happens while sober too with simple tasks like going to the bathroom or eating food, but while tripping, I did this with more complicated tasks like pitching a tent and collecting firewood and making a fire (camping trip lol). I didn't have to think about "okay now put this stake in the ground and put the rods through this hole," I just said at the beginning "pitch a tent" and then I didn't have to think any further; my body knew exactly what to do. Maybe I'm just an idiot that needs to focus a littler harder to pitch a tent, but either way it affected me so that I didn't have to think any other thought than "pitch a tent" and the task was done.

Sorry this is kind of a long-winded thing, but I'm very intrigued by this thought I had, and I may want to do an even more complex task the next time I trip like put a jigsaw puzzle together to see if my body will go on auto-pilot again. I guess I could say that I think acid gives me a sneak peek of what thousands of years of evolution will do for the human species (if we last that long). Thoughts please, don't be afraid to call me an idiot either because after re-reading this post, it does sound stupid :iamwithstupid:

Actually it was described in different words way back when LSD was first studied seriously. One of the effects LSD is said to cause is the formation of a "super-ego", an ego above and in control of (at times), the ego. This is super-ego may remain long after the psychedelic experience is over, and may even be permanent.

This is why on acid you feel like you're on 'autopilot' and yet more control and aware than ever; your ego is on auto-pilot and doing the simple things with normal good efficiency, without a profound consciousness to possibly weigh it down, while your profound consciousness ("You" now being located in the "super-ego", and all more basal functions still in the "ego") now is freed from input from all the things the ego has taken over, and you are simply able then to allocate more neural horsepower to cognitive processes like analysis.

I just call it a "third person perspective", but it's essentially the same concept.

i took a psych class and they said the id, ego, and superego all exist in everyday life

and they come out in our dreams or something

i dont think lsd "creates" this superego, it may bring it out more, like it is brought out in dreams
