That's actually a very good question. The short answer is 'I don't know.' The long answer is very long.
yes we would be a different species. its natural for humans to conceive, manipulate, create, and survive by any means possible. has been around since the ancient times.
if no one was conspiring there would never be any governments and no mass projects requiring social organization and lots of people. probably no really complex technological infrastructure, like the power grid, and certainly no internet, or even railways. no cars or highways built for them either. not even cobbled roman roads.
