it happens when i click a link, it's loading something big, i plug in a flashdrive, etc.

    but not always.

it's been on for like days before, but it's also turned off almost immediately.

    lately it's been getting worse.

i have norton installed and i have no viruses, defragged a couple days ago... what could bewrong?

After turning off, does the case feel hot? feel all areas.
Could be that its full of dust... CPU overheats.
Could be an old Power Supply unit.
    Could be many other things.

How old is PC? When was the last time you cleaned it?

And most importantly... is it a Dell? :D

The computer knows when you're masturbating and it does not approve.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Okay now, like the other guy said, it could be your CPU getting too hot or you need to replace your old power supply unit. My PC was randomly rebooting itself after being on for an hour or 2 about a year ago out of nowhere. After thinking it was my CMOS battery and the CPU, it turns out it was my power supply, I got a new one and no more random reboots.

First step... *Disregard if you routinely clean your pc*...

Go down to wallmart... pick up a can of airduster... Take your most likely domestically abused rig outside and spray its guts clean. I would advise disconnecting removable components for better reach (of course remember which and what goes where and how)
Concentrate on your Heatsink, spray it clean, make sure the fan is not clogged. Make sure PSU fan is also not clogged/spins when powered on.

If you do all of this and pc is still being gay... Im pretty certain you would just need to replace the PSU. However, im not an expert, just someone with alot of past problems and found solutions.

Sounds like over heating or a faulty power supply. Most likely it's not a software problem if it just shuts off.

if its happening after you plug in USB components more than likely it is your power supply.. if its just randomly doing it.. then its overheating..

ya one time a virus did that to me it was blaster worm but it shows a window before it closes with a time to tell you when your computer will shut down.

If it jus turned off no powder or nothing than its definatly something with the hardware. overheating CPU. or if its too old itll jus die. Im suprised mine hasnt it sounds like a lawnmower sometimes haha.

yeah and get a vacuum and suck out the dust. Also remove the fan from the processor but DONT touch the CPU. also you might have to apply some thermo cream on the CPU to cool it....

btw how old is the computer?
