Okay, so I have had my dreads for one year now. My hair is thin to begin with, so I only have like 30 of them. But I feel like they suck compared to what they should be by now. They've hardly grown. Some of them are legit, but at least four of them are not even completely dreaded yet (in fact, they feel soft still like after the first month of when you get dreads). Plus I have all kinds of loose hair and crocheting is ALWAYS temporary. So, all this plus my constant greasiness and the dreads' lack of growth (they havent grown much at all in a year, my right side is longer than my left- lobsided really) adds to all the negative stereotypes against dreadlocks (not that I care so much, it just makes me want to cut them sometimes.) I feel like I have put too much work into them for them to look how they look. Any advice? I'm sure the answer is to just wait it out, but I could use some encouragement. I wash them with DreadheadHQ's shampoo like 2-3 times a week and do all that maintainance crap, but nothing seems to work. I'll post pictures soon so you all can see what I mean. Thanks guys.
I don't remember the last time I waxed honestly. Most of my dreads don't really need it anyway, but maybe I should wax the softer ones?
Here are some pictures. The one of me holding the little girl is older (8 month old dreads?) and so they're longer now. But if you look in the back, some of those dreads are still the same. Those are the problem areas. They still aren't hardening up, and I don't know what the deal is. And you can't really tell from these pictures (I'll try to find more) but the left side is significantly shorter than the right side.
i dont think they look to bad, i think you might be washing to much, but that is my opinion. i wash 2-3 times a week myself, but that is only because my line of work gets them really dirty on a daily basis. when i am off work for a week or two, i only wash maybee 1 time a week then. try just once a week washing, see if that helps, it may take a few weeks for your scalp to adjust , so it may get more oily than you use too, but that will eventually balance itself out. as for the loose hair, i dont think there is much ya can do about it, i am pretty sure we all have alot of loose hair, i did notice once my hair stoppped being so oily, alot of the loose hair eventually knotted up inot a dread that it was close to, but you will never be rid of all loose hair, and yes, just have patience brother...lol i know you prolly dont wanna hear that, but that is really what will help, some peeps hair grows really slow, when my wifey was pregnent,{ one of the 4 times that she was} i used to take some of her prenatal vitamins, that shit made my hair grow super fast, but i dont know if that will work for everybody. if ya wanna try, im sure gnc, or any other health store will have them, and for the record, i didnt grow tits or like to wear pink when i took them, so i think you will be fine...lol good luck, and keep us updated on progress...
Haha! Thanks man. I looked around for some vitamins to make them grow faster but I never know what to get so I always end up just leaving. And recently, one of my dreads on the left side just completely fell out and I had to re-backcomb it. And when i did, it got waaayy shorter than the rest of my dreads. What could ever make a dread fall out (especially after a year)? Damn this thin hair of mine.
I have thin hair too and my left side has way shorter dreads than the right. Most of them on my left are at least 3 inches shorter than the right but you know it doesn't really matter. I would say stop messing and stressing. They look fine and good.
They look fine. Your hair is real short so it will take longer for them to knot up. Dont compare your progress to that of others. Your hair will dread on its own time. Patience. =]
The One Where You Are Holding A Bottle In Your Left Hand, Very Nice Photo, I Assume That's Your "Better Half" In The Other Hand. Cheers Glen.
I would personally suggest continuing to wash them 2-3 times a week, if that's what you're used to. If you're already complaining of them being greasy not washing them will just make that problem worse and make the hair more slick and less inclined to knotting up. Clean hair knots faster and all that stuff. Just relax and go with the flow. And my left side seems to always be longer and less tightened up then the right side, I think everyone has that one part that seems to be saying 'fuck you' to the rest of the dreads. I wouldn't worry too much about it
Washing your hair strips your hair and scalp of the natural oils it makes, in attempt to make it cleaner. In doing so, it throws off the balance, and your scalp produces much more oil to compensate for that, making you need to wash your hair again...and over and over and over. If it is getting oily and greasy quickly, I'd gradually decrease washings. That doesn't mean hold off on cleaning- just wash when you feel like you need it. I think that over time, you would see yourself needing to wash less and less, and stays less oily for longer.
This Problem Simply Comes Back To Which Side You Sleep On. When I Started Dreading My Right Side Was At The Stage Of Creating A Few Dreads, And My Left Side Had Nothing... So I Made The Point Of Going To Sleep Each Night On My Left Side........ .......Easier Said Than Done, Took Me Nearly A Month Before I Could Do It, I Guess Old Habits Die Hard. Another Idea To Consider If You Toss And Turn Alot, Is to Do What Chronic Snorers Do, And Thats Place A Pillow Behind You So You Can't Roll Over.... I Personally Didn't Use A Pillow. I Used A CAT, Thats Right A CAT, My 20 year old Cat Liam Always Snuggles Up Against The Base Of My Spine For Heat And Company, So It Worked Out Well For Both Of Us.... Cheers Glen.
Haha, Thanks Glen. I'll just have to stuff pillows all around my body as my cat is a horrible sleeper and moves around more than I do haha. Plus he has a nasty habit of trying to sleep on my face and suffocate me.
if you want your hair to grow faster there a vitiman called bioton it helps not a super vitamen tho and massage your scalp fer at least 5 mins a day i PROMISe thatll get your hair growing
I don't believe that whole sleeping thing and dreads. I sleep on both sides because I co-sleep and breastfeed so I am always tossing and turning and switching my son from one side to the other and my left side is still shorter. Oh and if your hair is greasy do what most people say and slowly go from washing like every other say to every 3 days for a few weeks then every 4 days for a few weeks and so on. I usually had very greasy hair as well and now can go about a week before I get an oily scalp, so that is true about your scalp adjusting.
I never ever sleep on my back and the back of my hair is short and way tighter than the rest. So I'm with ya.
