Meat meal can contain the boiled down flesh of animals we would find unacceptable for consumption. This can include zoo animals, road kill, and 4-D (dead, diseased, disabled, dying) livestock. Most shockingly, this also can include dogs and cats. The process that turns these animals and animal parts into pet food is also disgusting. After all, it takes a lot to turn roadkill into something owners feel good about pouring into their pets' bowls. Ann M. Martin describes the process in Food Pets Die For: "At the rendering plant a machine slowly grinds the entire mess in huge vats. Then this product is cooked at temperatures between 220 degrees Fahrenheit and 270 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes to one hour. The mixture is centrifuged (spun at a high speed) and the grease (or tallow) rises to the top and it is removed from the mixture. The grease becomes the source of animal fat in most pet foods. Oftentimes, when you open a standard can of dog food, you will see a top layer of fat. The centrifuged product is the source of that fat, which is meant to entice a hungry dog or cat. After the grease is removed in the rendering process, the remaining material is dried. Meat meal, and meat and bone meal are the end product of this process. This dried material is usually found in dry pet food." This is the reason I only feed my cat the same food I'm having for supper. http://www.naturalnews.com/012647.html
there is a processing plant on Neville Island.. http://www.answers.com/topic/valley-proteins-inc The winds of change might be blowing from Valley Proteins, but you'll still probably want to hold your nose. A major US rendering company with 12 plants operating in seven states, Valley Proteins and its Carolina By-Products subsidiary gather inedible waste from slaughtering operations, provide dead animal collection, and pick up used cooking grease and bones from restaurants and supermarkets. The company turns these otherwise thrown-away products into liquid fats, oils, and protein meals for agricultural and pet-food manufacturing companies. Its products are also used in the production of bio-diesel and other bio-fuels... I work not to far from here,, It stinks really bad..
So this is somehow nastier than what an animal can find to eat on its own how? Obviously there are some unscrupulous pet food makers out there, but have you seen what animals eat when left to their own devices? I hardly see how a report like this, or even a post about it, is going to affect what most folks feed their pets. In fact, being a responsible pet owner means a little reading on the back of the food they get and NOT giving them table scraps! Table scraps can be really bad for your pet, and is hardly a balanced diet for them, in spite of the opinion you have put forth here that scraps can replace other food. its nice that you care, but thats just bad advice.
I totally agree Samson... My one gfs dad thinks that his dog should have chicken and eggs everyday, hamburger for dinner. This dogs fur is really bad, its tail fur is real thin at the rump, he has a mange itch all the time.. Thats cause his skin isnt getting the right nutrients.. I love my dog, he might get a people cookie, some gravy, a pinch of ham, potato chip, snacks every now and then. xmas he got a few people cookies but I give my dog the same food "kibble and bits" all the time.. once you change it, thats when they get finicky.. & a sax player I used to know worked at the Joy dog food plant in Imperial Pa. There isnt any horror stories, its shipped there in containers and canned and bagged at this plant.. ive been there once, it smells like hot corn meal and thats about it.. while that fat processing plant might sound really bad. There isnt much we can do about it, This is the process of our civilization. no more different that drinking the water that you shit in.. Its processed and refined, without it we would die.. :coffee:
OP is citing naturalnews and I am therefore willing to bet his/her diet is exceptional and likely suitable for their cat
Think of all those poor old ladies on fix incomes (or Mad Max) who regularly consume dog food because it’s cheaper than Spam or Dinty Moore beef stew Hotwater
If you think about it, owners should have the choice if they want their pets to receive an autopsy to exactly know what had killed them. Possibly many pet foods could be the reason why so many owners are forking out big bucks on vet bills.
dang after reading this I got grossed out cus actually one time I got dared to eat some dog food and I ate a couple of those dry balls. im fine I didn't get sick or anything but nasty to know that I ate some crazy stuff. I even ate part of a doggie treat one time for the heck of it cus it smelt good.
my cat, is an IAM's cat. lol.. but ya she's healthy and happy. she enjoy's her food. she also enjoy's the small amount of people food i give her but thats nothing too bad.... just like the tuna water, cheese, she likes nibbling on carrots and lettuce (i think my bunny taught her that lol)
