Awesome sci fi/action movie with a sophisticated, yet primitive, alien culture that has a barefoot lifestyle. There are scenes that promote barefooting in a beautiful natural setting. Perhaps James Cameron is one of us?

If you have the option to see the movie in 3D - do it - a technology breakthrough!

    Happy Holidays! Peace!

Long hair, bare feet, minimal clothes, close to nature; what's not to like?

I just saw it yesterday. Amazing film. I felt so identified with the Na'vi. And yes, I went to see it barefoot LOL. Too bad that the aweful weather in Philly forced me to wear a heavy coat and not some loin cloth and tribal jewelry! :)

What's confusing about not wanting to wear shoes?

This movie sounds very cool. I am going to have to go out and see it now.

I saw the film last week, and highly recomend it. Pandora is so lovely it should be hung in an art gallery! No wonder people are depressed about being unable to go there. Don't believe that? see www.naviblue.com

    The not wearing shoes bit!

Every time I have ever walked bare feet I have somehow managed to damage my feet in some way.

Not flaming anyone, don't worry. Just meant it exactly as it was written.

That's because you can't expect to just take your shoes off and jump right into it. It takes about 2 weeks of constant barefooting to toughen your feet up a bit to where going barefoot is actually comfortable.

That's a fair point, I have nothing against it whatsoever so maybe I should give it a proper pop.

I prefer the free feeling after all. I think any damage done to my fee is a testament to perhaps where I have attempted to walk bare foot..

Maybe Barry Island beach isn't quite the safest place in the world :p

ok, i finally watched the movie. very flashy and entertaining, those oversized smurfs are damn cool , barefoot , new age and stuff but don't you think it's all just exploitation ? it's only a simplistic remix of abused commonplaces all there to teach us a lie, that good prevails in the end over evil, violence and greed. doesn't work like that in the real world. the real trick glasses aren't those issued for 3D but the fake ideological glasses intrinsic to the movie. i love cinema and hope that it becomes more than mere entertainment. i mean, we all do know that native minorities never win, in the end. they are routinely crushed among (our) general indifference. so instead of tranquilizing, reassuring hollywood flicks I'd wish to see a film that make people angry, conscience shakers, not overly sweetened, ritalin-added milk shakes.

btw I _didn't_ pay the ticket.

    Great points, jagerhans.

I suppose I've become so cynical about Hollywood that I don't expect anything that's not either a not-so-subtle whitewash or outright propaganda effort. One bizarre effect of this film has been termed the "Avatar Blues". It's a damning indictment on society that a mere movie could have such an effect.

I do enjoy Hollywood movies, however and did enjoy the revolutionary CGI and escapist fantasy of this one, but I went in with no expectations of seeing anything that had any redeeming social value. It's kind of like when I invited friends to go see "2012": "Come and see some of the most amazing CGI effects created to date, unsullied by any kind of plot, character development or meaningful dialogue".

As Marshall McLuhan said in 1964, "The medium is the message". Passive mediums like TV and cinema are inherently flawed; only by acknowledging said flaws may we be immune from their insidious effects and be able to enjoy them by taking what we see at face value. As for the masses, they have always been and always will be sheep, and enjoy it, so any aggressive attempt to enlighten them will be met with either dismissal, disdain or outright violence.

I thought the movie represented more than a "fantasmical" escape. There is a clear indictment of the industrial military complex and our societal values. The "simplistic" approach to life followed by the Na'vi should lead to many reappraisals of where many of us are going. You may be over cynical - but no one should have expected a "literary" or "philosophical" masterpiece.

As for the bare feet - we are one with the world (wherever that may be)! And hopefully, no one here has the "Avatar Blues".

That is precisely why I pay to see escapist movies like this.
