I'd say I am a hippy. I have most of the ideals. I'm a vegetarian, I do like going barefoot, and music is a big part of my life. So ya I would call myself a hippy.
I'm an unapologetic hippie. I am a pacifist, vegetarian, activist, barefoot, long haired, musician, jewelry maker, yogi, meditating, non conformist dude. And I dress the part too
I avoid categorization whenever possible, and don't know exactly what makes a hippie a hippie. However I can say that I am more of a self-reliant idealist than a conformist. I tend to do whatever inspires me, and I'm open to making friends with different kinds of people as long as I feel a real connection. I hike nature trails barefoot because it feels healthy and satisfying to me, and not because I identify with hippies.
I believe in peace, love, and freedom. I'm in love with the outdoors and music is also a big part of my life. I consider myself a beach bum-hippie. I get called both, especially at school because of the way I dress. In the winter I look more like a hippie: tye dye shirts, hemp jewelry and fleece pajama pants. I guess they label me a beach bum because I wear beach shorts the other 70% of the year. I don't care for shoes so I don't even own a pair anymore. I have just gone barefoot year round for the past 2 years. I love people's reaction when I tell them I don't own shoes.
i believe even if we werent barefoot that we still are modern hippies. i mean look at the styles that are becoming popular now. but i love going barefoot.
Being new here, I'm still trying to understand the terminology. As I understand the question, a "barefooter" is hippy in name only because one doesn't adopt all the outward trappings of "hippism"? That may be too harsh and constrictive, my apologies as I can't think of a better way to phrase it. So in that respect, I am a barefooter. I take my shoes off whenever I can safely though in the climate I live in, I have to say flip flops make walking out to get my mail much more comfortable. To outward appearances, I'm pretty conformist, but in my defense I will say that is because I have to deal with conformists on a regular basis and if I don't dress the part, I I've had to expend a lot of energy proving myself before I can make any progress. So outward conformity is expedient for me. I am an activist having participated in several causes against corporate interests and even liberal political campaigns. Anti-war, humanist who's first instinct is to stand up for the down trodden or dis-enfranchised. I too like reactions. My favorite is when someone who only knows the buttoned up me, gets close enough to see the real me. My favorite was a guy I worked with. He saw me reading Rolling Stone at the lunch table. His mouth literally fell open. He was so sure I was a Republican tight ______.
I don't call myself a hippy, but most people I know call me one anyway. I don't really care if I am a hippy or not. I enjoy being free, being in nature, nudism and barefooting most of all. If that does make me hippy, I probably am...
Yeh, I agree. If insisting that if you go barefoot you have to be a hippy....well thats a pretty intolerant stance to take. If you're inner being is into freedom or tolerence or hoping to make the world better, then yeh you are a hippie. Clothes and lack of shoes don't get it. Which isn't to denigrate people here who love to go barefoot and feel textures and go into stores barefoot. I know I do and those experiences are really important (maybe borderline anarchistic). Just my def of a hippy and my belief that you can't insist someone's a hippy just cause they go barefoot.
