Probably the appropriate section for this, first post for me here Now don't worry, I've been doing maths like all my life... As simple as it might sound, why the ***k does 1 + 1 = 2? Let's think about it, all that surrounds us is counted, ones and mores. I was looking at a car, a car made of a body, a body made of steel, steel made of iron and carbon(correct me if I'm wrong), iron made of 26 protons and about the same number of electrons, protons made of quarks,...that's science. So, bang two cars together, and you get a lot more than 2 pieces lying on the ground... But that's not my question... How can we claim that Maths win? I mean, I can differentiate the square root of the quotient of pi and x squared, but I can't explain to myself why is math above, or why does math seem above, every material concept. Math can predict, explain, prove things. But then, it's more than just a convention of symbols, symbols represent ideas, concepts. Math can be done without symbols, the expression 1+1=2 can be written so many ways. I cannot prove it false, and I cannot explain why it works... it works damnit. Maybe I'm just too much out of my mind. :watchplant: Thanks for enlightening me
Math is just a method of describing nature. The natural world is a certain way by its ... nature ... math is a set of rules humans have pieced together that seems to never change. It's a universal language that anyone who exists finds useful. I think it's likely that other advanced civilizations in the universe, if there are any, would have many or all of the same concepts with different symbols representing the same theories.
Because it is what it is, man. I look at the world and i notice it's turning, while my guitar gently sleeps. Evrything just is, as death not ends it. If Joe Schmoe thought that 1 and 1 equaled 3, than that is joe Schmoe's truth. Roussue-I felt before I thouight
Yet the numbers are still estimations. Why the numbers are the way they are? Why the particular masses of electrons, protons, and neutrons?
Maths are a way for us to define things and have a logic. The same way science or language works. Why does why mean why? Of course why can be used in various contexts but it still remains a constant, the same as 1 or 2. 1 car, 1 proton. Various questions of why?
Hello, because we wouldn't be here to think about such stuff if the masses would be slightly different. Regards Gyro
