(500) Days of Summer Movie Blurb by Shale August 13, 2009 This movie has been out for two weeks now, but kept getting bumped by other movies I wanted to see. Today, after a medical appointment let me go by noon, I made it to the Cinema at 12:20, just in time to finally catch this one. At this late date, you have either seen it if you are into these romantic comedies or don't plan to see it (or at least until the DVD comes out). So, I won't give much of a blurb, except to say that it is a novel approach to the usual formula that these movies are made by. It opens with a voiceover narrator setting things in motion saying: This is the story about a boy and a girl However, It is not a love story. The movie is told from the perspective of Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) a romantic guy (writes those words of wisdom in greeting cards) who is looking for that one person to share his life. Along comes Summer (Zooey Deschanel) a new assistant to his boss and Tom instantly falls for her, but with all the angst young men get when approaching women romantically. (Been there - done that) Summer is an enigma - distant, provocative, elusive, forward, cold, warm and sometimes hot - all the things about a woman that can drive a young man nuts. The movie covers all of the 500 days of this relationship, listing them on the screen but it is quirky, bouncing back and forth to the various days in no particular order. We see the highs and lows of a relationship, reality played out against expectations. Watching this movie, there were times that I remembered from my youth and felt glad that I am now old and no longer in the hunt. (Actually, that is a lie to myself - I would love to again be young and confused and chasing the game - even with the trips and stumbles and falling on my face. It is all worth that exhilarating feeling in your gut.) This was an enjoyable movie and it was refreshing to see a romantic comedy deviate from the usual formula. In fact, I would recommend it to guys since it is really the story of a guy dealing with his romantic expectations and reality.
Okay, seriouslly, this movie is the most amazing movie ever. I mean first you have the most perfect actress and actor to play the parts. And then the story...its just amazing. I mean it doesnt end the way eveyy singlee otherr movie ends. Its different, but yet, still happy at the end. Words cant even describe how much this movie means to me. lol I cannot wait until it comes out on DVD. Its soon!! Ahh. Love. Oh, and, it has an amazing soundtrack. :]
I enjoyed everything about this movie except for the plot... The actors are basically amazing, the characters are pretty good, the filming was good, the organization was good. I just thought the story was really lacking something and I can't put my finger on what it is.
I rented this movie weeks ago from Netflix and just got around to watching it today. I absolutely loved it. The truthfulness of it was just so perfect. It depicted relationships and life as they really are. You can feel like someone you're with was the one and be so completely wrong. The one you're with can say how they don't want a relationship when the truth is they just don't want one with you and will only truly believe when they find their "one". The slow decaying of Tom and Summer's relationship was honest and raw. Definitely one of those "not-a-love-story" movies you learn from.
Oh yeah. Also. I hated the end. I mean Autumn...? Who would have predicted that Autumn comes after summer?
That's the only part I disliked. The girl didn't look like his type at all. Snobby and uptight. She looked like a barbie doll. Oh, and the music was fabulous. I got the whole soundtrack on my iPod within an hour of seeing the movie.
That's exactly what I thought.. and of course my somewhat snobby mother is like "Oh she is much better for him." I was like gahh whatever.. you just don't get this. Summer was adorable with Tom.
Summer would be adorable with anyone. Just throwing it out there, Zooey Whatever-her-name-is is pretty attractive.
Exactly. They were both quirky characters and seemed nice together. I don't think this new girl would have anything in common with him besides architecture but I guess I'm being judgmental. lol How many people like The Smiths and work at a greeting card company?
Hehe I agree! Zooey is too cute. I love her real life man.. Ben Gibbard. They're an adorable couple as well.
good movie it really depicts how relationships work. It was not a romantic comedy but a good coming of age story.
haha, that's probably why I hated it. I have NEVER found a story described as a "coming of age story" that I liked. I don't know why. Just can't handle the awkwardness I guess.
Normally I like Zooey Deschanel, but I just didn't think her character was likeable in this film. Of course, it's normal when a relationships goes wrong and no-one is perfect. In this way I liked that the plot stayed true to live, but doesn't mean I have to like Her (Summer, not Zooey) for that. Not to mention that, of course, she was the "girl that everyone wanted". That was just too typical for my liking. Otherwise I loved JGD and the cinematography and the soundtrack, as well as the supporting cast.
I loved the movie and a big fan of JGL! I want a guy like Tom, adorable, sweet and loving! Plus he had excellent type in music. Where oh where is my Tom?
Good movie. But Zooey Deschanel's character is painful to watch. Oh, and guy from Criminal Minds is absolutely terrible despite the fragment of a role he was given. He'd probably drop the movie half a star on his own.
