European heroin users are on high alert as the death toll rises from heroin tainted with anthrax. At least eight people have died -- seven in Scotland and one in Germany -- since early December, and another 14 Scottish heroin users have been hospitalized after being diagnosed with anthrax. Meanwhile, drug reform and drug user activists are reporting a cluster of nine suspicious heroin-related deaths in Coimbra, Portugal, although it is unclear at this point whether they are linked to anthrax-tainted heroin.

The vast majority of heroin consumed in Europe comes from Afghanistan, and while so far evidence is lacking, speculation is that anthrax spores may have been present in bone meal, an animal product sometimes used as a cutting agent. Another possibility is that containers used in the heroin production process were contaminated with anthrax spores. And, given fears that Al Qaeda and its Taliban allies could resort to biological warfare against the West and given the Taliban's role in the Afghan opium and heroin trade, a bio-attack cannot be completely ruled out.

"The anthrax-infected heroin hasn't decreased use, whether people are injecting it or chasing [smoking] it," said Tam Miller, chair of Chemical Reaction, an Edinburgh drug user group, and a member of INPUD (the International Network of People who Use Drugs). "People are scared -- you can be sure of that -- but I think they're more afraid of withdrawing. The Scottish government's advice was for people to stop using heroin, but that won't happen."

It's not terrorists... Why would they poison the heroin? It would poison an minority that most people don't care about, the government would be happy to use it in their anti drug speechs, and if they arnt taking credit for it, it's not helping their cause at all.

Ben Laden had the same idea a while back, he had a plan to flood the USA with poisoned cocaine, but the drug cartel in south America wouldn't sell it to him, they said it would give their business a bad name! Allot of the Taliban are drug addicts themselves, bunch of paranoid nut cases. Most of them are not even really religious, just criminals using the situation to get away with drug dealing and murder.

Actually, most of them are 'freedom fighters' that either the US or Russia trained to fight for them over the years...

Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and pretty much all those that are on the most wanted terror list, were trained, funded and aided by those that are now fighting them...

That isn't to say they are nice people... just that they are only the 'enemy' now, because thats what it suits those in power to call them... for now...

Ahhh you make a good point, but I would say that's pretty inaccurate too. True, alot of the higher ranking officers or whatever fit that description, but there hasn't been any need to train them for about 20 years.

'Most' are men too young fit that description, drawn into the fight because of extreme poverty, warped religious views/propaganda, the belief that the US desires a permanent presence, and a lack of trust in the Karzai government and ineffectiveness of US infrastructure projects.

It's slightly more complicated than that.
"Many of the former mujahideen gradually were incorporated into the new Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police."
So they are also fighting themselves, go figure! as obviously they are one homogeneous group of people with one thought amongst them.

Did you not know that?, if you did why not mention it, I wonder...mmmm

If it wasn't for the super powers playing games there, they would be fighting themselves using swords and crude firearms, instead of AK47s, rockets and other modern day 'toys'...

If it wasn't for the funding that built these organizations they wouldn't have the resources they now have.

The fact that they are also fighting each other doesn't make any of this any better... unless of course you feel their lives aren't equal to other human lives.
