After Pete's first attempt at growing, he failed due to overwatering... Now he is much more careful, spraying water every few days, never too much. But he wants to know how to identify when a plant needs water, what to look for, so to speak... be it in the leaves or whatever.

    Thanks in advance

when you water to saturation....feel how heavy the whole thing is.
For soil, next time you water it should be around half the weight it was when saturated.
and as said dry crust on at least top 1/2 inch of soil and the leaves will drop and generally look a bit thirsty.

Your pot needs to have holes at the bottom

Ive grown a few in 5gl buckets that I never put holes in.. never had a problem..
My trick was to pre soak perlite when mixing soil batch. then watering it lighter cause the core of soil is moist and fluffy.. no holes makes no spills of dirt anywhere. I do like to do this with window mommy plants thats going to be moved alot..

u need to put holes in the bottom.
Then when watering allow for 10% run off.....this gets rid of salts in the soil which r produced by the plant which are corosive if allowed to build up

some grow bags have no hole for drainage .. for experienced grower that know how to water correctly. its not always necessary to have holes.

While Im not saying you shouldnt have any holes at all.. it can be done, if grower dont use a bunch of burning nutrients..

in hydro ....the pots need holes.....its essential.
Mision critical if you want a top quality high yield.
Ive seen a lot of peeps with stressed plants....they think they are over-fed or have some sort of defficiency.........its actually due to toxic salt build up caused by having no run-off water to cleanse the substrate during watering.
Thats why thers is a hole in your ass.....its to let all your waste products out.....think about it, everything needs to excrete waste !

I used Sunshine No.4 potting soil- great stuff: use it if you can get a hold of it. What I woud do is lift the container and wait till it was almost empty of water- the plants should not show any signs of dehydration. Then I would water until I saw water came out of the bottom drainage holes- then stop. it's that simple. Having drainage holes in your container is the only way that I can think of that you can flush your plants at least 2 or 3 weeks before harvesting. I don't care how good you are- if you are growing indoors you have to flush your plants. As the old saying goes - half the fun is getting there. If your plant is full of fertilizer- fuck it: I don't want to smoke it!

I fully agree........if the plants arent flushed they will be full of chemicals making them hellish to smoke.
