Why is Shale so fascinating?

I honestly don't believe that the end justifies the means. I've seen threads similar to this get really nasty where people said things that they couldn't take back and people got banned. It's all great that you are kissing and making up now- but what would have happened if it got to the point where daggers were flying?

There is always a "what would have happened," but you can't stiffle yourself trying to prevent every one of those.

Every family has occasional disagreement, discord or conflict. Some even make the news when daggers are brought into it.

But, if you resolve a discord, promote understanding, maybe eventually even acceptance, then that is what the debate was all about. Why we call it a forum board.

"life is a daring adventure - or it is nothing."

    Hello,

everything that is written or said is written or said for ever. There's no way back. Even if postings would be deleted on this site they remain in lots of search machines and other caches. I've made an idiot out of myself so many times and I'm still alive, so get over it and join the show ;).

    Regards
    Gyro

I'm another one of Shale's fans. I think he is writing some of the best posts on the forum these days.

He shows a great deal of the open-mindedness that should be central to "hippie" ethics, but he is old enough that he's grounded in reality and has some of the wisdom that age gives you. He's one of a handful of folks here that I'd like to meet face-to-face.

His deep personal revelations are helping me to gain a clearer understanding of how things work across the full spectrum of human sexuality. I'm a very straight guy so his choices are definitely not for me, but he is helping me to see things from his point of view.

    Stay cool, Shale! :)

Ha, hope I don't sound out of line here, as I said before I see nothing fascinating about shale, I just see him as one of many, he's interesting indeed, I would like to know how you avoided the draft though, I know it was a lottery thing, I just had my number pulled, maybe yours wasn't, one other thing that is odd is that hippies did not tend to glorify each other, we were what we were, went about our ways in a kinda of anonymity, I may be missing the point though, I guess Shale is being looked at in retrospect of what we had and what we lost..

    Keep on thinking free shale..

    Peace

Oh, I joined the US Air Force three days after graduating from high school.

They made me give up my draft card that I had been carrying for a year.

Your questions seem reasonable enough and your tone is certainly not objectionable, so I don't see why you wouldn't deserve a reasoned response.
I'm willing to give it a shot from my perspective.

This isn't so much about what Shale was as it is about what he is here on the forum. If there is a definition of the hippie "ideal" or ideology, it seems to me that Shale is merely being honored for exemplifying that ideal, possibly to an extent that others haven't achieved to become noteworthy.

He is respectful towards people whose ideas he doesn't necessarily agree with.
He's calm, albeit stern, under fire.
His words always carry an air of focus and calm - what I like to think of as
    "centered-ness."

Lest we forget in the midst of all this, Shale didn't start this thread and didn't ask for it. He did make the first reference to this thread being a "Shale Fan Club", but I'm dead certain that he said that with tongue in cheek. With that understanding, this is nothing more than a spontaneous affirmation that we who are posting positive comments appreciate Shale among us.

Whether or not everyone understands or agrees with the motivation, this is simply an expression of appreciation.

Oh, just my wishy-washy way with words, from a fair and pallid life of writing sallow, insipid verse.

Thank God for the Godless Soviet Union.

I scored high on office skills so they taught me some Russian and sent me to Turkey. I "fought" in the Cold War, spying on Soviet radio comm and using a tele-typewriter. Oh, it was all a big secret, but our base in Turkey had all our directional antennae pointing north.

It reminded me of Spy versus Spy in the MAD comic books.

Ironically, my present boss and about half dozen co-workers are Russian.
