    Would you tell everyone?

While most wars are caused over religion, it also gives people hope, and a reason to live.

Without it, crime would go up, and I think the world would go to shit.

    Thoughts?

i've wondered this many times, and over time my answer has changed. i absolutely would. not doing so would be terribly dishonest and the destruction avoided in war and terrorism would be far more than that caused by loss of hope- that is something that humanity could and should be able to work through together.

    Yup definitely I would.

And the world would not go to shit every religious person has big doubts sooner or later. The only problem is that ppl can base a lot of there life around religious traditions and when a way of life is threatened they defend it fiercely. After all humans like routines gives us some sort of a plan or purpose over a course of the day and confidants over our ability to see possible out comes of the near future which gives us ability to feel safe. And of coarse the sense of knowing the answers to the big questions and the feeling of acceptance from the religious community.

So its only natural for ppl to fight over religious beliefs because they want to force this well being on to others. Failing to realize that its the feeling of understanding and acceptance which are important not the mythology it self.

So if there is solid evidence I think ppl would just except it and simply keep the traditions and the world would go round and round as usual.

The world has already gone to shit. I would not withhold any information.

Maybe the death penalty would invoke more fear if more people thought that there was no life after death.

I guess I would tell people but I dont think the really religious types would listen anyway. Most are not very open minded.

    this.

IF you had conclusive evidence that proved god to be non existent, they would still be in denial. At least the ones I've had in depth debate with. It would have to someone they look up to, like say if their preacher told them. Which they wouldn't, cause that would then put hisself out of job.. LOL

But I would be on the side that did tell people. Be like I TOLD U SOOO.. lol

The notion that religion is required to be moral is ridiculous. Without a god life is still a lot more terrible when people harm other people and a lot better when they cooperate.

If anything the unjustified and irrational oppression of homosexuals and stifling of sexuality would end, making the world a better place. Perhaps the formerly religious would even embrace reason. That may be wishful thinking though. The lack of reason and intellectual integrity is what leads to religious beliefs in the first place.

without a god concept racism would EXPLODE
"supreme beings" became secular and worldly.

with no consequence of sin there is no cocept of sin.

the only morals will be something along the lines of "an eye for an eye"

if you havnt noticed, most people getting the death penalty arnt very religious. (or at least wernt when they commited the crime). Because religious people think that if they kill someone, they go to hell.

It's the people who think death is the end that kill themself and kill others.

    Why?

    Huh?

Perhaps not "sin" as defined by religion. There would however be good and evil and there would be things that I should do and things that I should not do. Most people would form the conclusion that being a good person is a thing that they should do, for obvious reasons. I, an atheist have come to this conclusion by myself.

    See above.

Religion teaches that things that one should do are whatever god says that they are;. Regardless of whether said things are good or evil.

Stabby, I'm pretty sure that my above post would apply to you too.

The greater purpose is what keeps a lot of people from doing evil. But if it was proven that there's no god, no purpose, and we're all here just cuz, many people would lose the little voice in their head telling them that there will be a consiquence. Christianity is one of the most charitible orginizations out there, because they believe they will be rewarded in heaven.

While you are an atheist and don't commit felonies and steal from people all the time, a lot of people wouldn't handle it that way.

If they're ignorent enough to join some of the religions out there, mabey it's best that they are let to believe what they want, and not take away their reason to live, give, and their reason not to murder.

I definitely would. I'm all for progress not just w/e it is to keep us safe. If i passed the chance up, i would terribly regret it (speaking as if i was a soul after death).

I remember when I was a kid attending lutheran grammer school and thinkig what a bunch of fuckwit's they were for trying to say that Dinosaur bones were a test from God to prove one's faith in him. Then they would also say almost with the same breath how the bones had been put there by the Devil to lead people away from God.

I'd tell everyone who would listen, I'd also spread the word about the multiple mega-volcanos that are overdue fr their regularly scheduled eruptions by a few hundred years and explain how corporations are trying to control world population by forcing the lower castes of society to survive on heavily tainted food sources and GMO crops, keeping the masses dull witted, passive and ignorant via psyche meds and television to prevent an otherwise inevitable global revolution of the have not's against the haves.

Hey, when you're on a roll, why stop short.

Religion by no means keeps people from doing evil. The majority of prisoners in the united states describe themselves as christians and believe in mystical big brother in the sky. As do the soldiers who commit war crimes across the world, slaughtering the innocent. You are missing the fact that there really are no perceived consequences in Christianity. The attitude is that "it doesnt matter how terrible the things I do are as long as I accept baby jesus or confess, I will get to go to heaven" and such an attitude undermines morality greatly. Conversely, if there is no afterlife, this is all we have and the very real this-worldly consequences ruining ones only chance at existence is a powerful deterrent.

Christianity has a long and bloody history full of atrocities and oppression. The Christianity of today is quite tame to the horrors of years past and it is the growing secular opposition that makes it so. We have morality in our DNA from millions of years of evolution and as history and statistics have shown, the religious are no more moral than the non religious. if anything, religion is used as a justification for evil and oppression. Try telling homosexuals who cannot get married because a bunch of god heads dont like the notion that religion begets morality.

It is a meaningless question. If you can prove it it is already known. The question is still, do they believe it.

So you wouldn't agree that religion in any way gives people a larger obligation to do what they think is right even if it might go against what they want?

When you think about what I've said, don't just apply it to yourself, think about the ignorent masses. How would they respond?

My turn. The question is, why don't we have a world president, and call him God, then people can worship him and we will all know he is real and everyone will be happy then.
