Barefoot Chat Room!!!

Discussion in 'Barefoot' started by Deleted member 159087, Feb 3, 2010.

  1. Hey, kids, we appear to have been granted our own chat space! On the menu bar, go into Chat Room, where you'll see a number of choices (HipChat, UK, etc.) Barefoot Chat is one of those choices. Click on that choice, and that should direct you into that particular space.

THANK YOU to the site administrators!

Far out :D Now if I could just get my stupid browser to load the chat room :(

  3. There should be a tool bar on the site itself (Hip Forums Home, User CP, Quick Links, Forum Options, etc). Chat Room is on that tool bar.

Since the chat room has been created, is it agreeable to take down the permanent "sticky" message at the top of all the "Barefoot" forum pages?

  6. The poll has already been eliminated, at my own request. THANK YOU to those who voted one way or another. Now that we have a chat room, LET'S USE IT!

I've seen like 10 barefooters at different times go into that chatroom.

    and then log out.

Why make a chat you arent going to use?..

Thank you, but there's still a post permanently stuck at the top of every page. Those who wanted the chat room are now aware of it.

  9. I requested the poll be removed; it was.
Someone "pinned" the chat room item at the top of the page, possibly the site administrator.
    Move on.

Indeed. Here's something I wrote in response to somebody wanting to create (yet another) MySpace group on barefooting. If you change "MySpace group" to "chat room" in my response, I think it applies equally well.

[O]ne only spends a certain amount of time per day reading the SBL mailing list or, more generically, reading about barefooting. Now take that same amount of time and instead divide it by the number of different barefoot groups on different web sites and one has only a fraction of the time to spend reading each. It's not clear there's any net gain.

Regarding MySpace in particular, there are already at least a dozen or so barefoot-related groups. Does the world really need yet another one? Most of them have little participation.

What typically happens is that somebody, with great enthusiasm, starts yet another barefoot-related group (for reasons that are unclear, specifically why the existing dozens of existing groups, for some reason or other, just simply won't do); then, within the first couple of weeks, hundreds of people join, a dozen or so post; then, after a couple of weeks, stone silence. Then some person thinks, "This group stinks! I know! I'll start my very own group that will (of course!) be *much* better! Yeah, that's the ticket!" And the cycle repeats.

i luv goin barefoot it so freeing!!

  12. Totally correct! I have routinely noticed the endless proliferation of barefoot groups on Facebook. People join "to join," not to discuss, as people are inclined NOT to write, but to "talk" (whether by cellphone or IM or what have you).

The only difference between one barefoot group and another on Facebook is, literally, an exclamation mark: Going Barefoot is one group, Going Barefoot! is another. Neither group has any discussion. Ho hum. Yawn.

The purpose of a chat room is to talk (real time, although it involves typing, not actually using the voice). I know several people who would like to get actual human responses to being confronted by the various "shoe police." The only way this can happen is if people here actually USE the new chat capability.

I do notice the problem that going into the chat room automatically defaults the user into HipChat. Then, you have to look for Barefoot Chat, and move there. I've annoyed the HipChatters a few times by logging in (by default) and logging out (going to Barefoot Chat). That's the way the system appears to be set up.

If members here don't use the Chat Room I'm certain it will eventually be taken away. It was just my attempt to try and make the many members here more personally acquainted, as so many appear to be on HipChat.

If it succeeds, it succeeds. If it fails, it fails. I'm only 1 member; 49 other members said they were also interested. No one forced them to vote. I'm assuming it can succeed if people (many of whom live in different time zones around the world) give it time and attention.

  13. Is there a time (since so many members live around the world) when a few members could congregate and get a discussion going? Say, mid-morning U.S. time for the afternoon for Europeans? or mid-afternoon U.S. Time for early evening Europeans?

Yeah, I mean, I can get to the chat room from the too bar but my browser actually won't load the chat room. I don't really know why, it might have something to do with me running Firefox Portable.

I hope fellow barefooters use it!

  17. Starting very slow, but definitely starting. I've had some good conversations with members who don't otherwise post. Plus people are not barefooting much or at all this time of year, so it's not a topic for immediate conversation. At any rate, "the system works." It just needs time and attention from others.

Yes, I agree the system works. Let's just wait and see what time the people are actually going to join the chat.
