I don't think RealPlayer will record FLV files. Personally I use the Moyea FLV Downloader.

As for viruses - it's obviously worth scanning anything you download before you open it, and quarantine / delete anything that looks in the slightest bit suspicious, but on the whole, you're fairly safe from grabbing video streams that are not even intended for downloading.
