Snowed in again so been working on homework, only one more month of this shit. I am also going back to FL in late April, this time Orlando, Miami, and the keys I am extremely excited.
I watched food Inc. 2 weeks ago, and since then I have gone completely eating organic right down to organic soda. I also only eat organic meat 3x a week so I have turned to soy fake chicken and tofu, so far I like the change, the food is good and I feel better, lots more energy. I also lost 7 lbs in two weeks so all in all I am happy with the decision and happy my hubby and two friends have also gone organic.

Ahoy Sister ... just to point out, organic meat creates a higher demand for cereals to feed the livestock, which in turn increases the demand for arable land to feed animals as opposed to peeps, and at the same time increases the water costing for meat.

To add, cereals are mostly grown using monoculture methods, which reduces the life span of the arable land due to the lack of biodiversity and crop rotation, as well as utilise high volumes of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, which leads to high levels of nitrogen run off and nitrous oxide ... which has 20 times more global warming potential than carbon dioxide. And then of course there is the methane aspect to livestock farming, which has 300 times the global warming potential than carbon dioxide.

At the same time cereal farming and the industrialised farming practices associated with monoculture methods not only exploits / cripples farm workers, but the use of chemical agribusiness products leads to major health risks for the farm workers, including sensory disruptions, memory loss, language problems, learning impairment and in some cases irreversible neurological damaged, higher risks of cancer, particularly breast cancer, as well as affecting the respiratory system and the reproductive system.

So while one may think that organic meat is somehow a positive to the individual consumer, it is ironically more of a detriment to social and environmental sustainability than non-organic meat. The obvious thing would be to stop eating meat, but hey, you know … consumer choice today vs. the fate of future generations tomorrow.

Don BK, far fewer cattle are raised "organically," - you simply cannot achieve the levels of mass production raising cows organically over.. inorganically. So I hold that it is indeed better, less wasteful, etc. Not to mention it is far more humane, which is also an issue. You can't force people not to eat meat, but you can find them better options. I think some people really do need to eat meat, even if I am not one of them.

But, you are right, people should really make meat a less prominent part of their diets if they can't cut it out entirely.

Liz, that is awesome. "Diets" are fads, they are shit. Have a healthy diet and you will never need to go on a fad diet. You really just have to do something that you can maintain.

I just started using this: http://www.fitday.com
There's a food chart with a calorie counter, nutrition chart, activity and mood logs, weight and measurement charts. It is really good whether you are trying to get in peak shape or just lose weight. To lose weight you generally need to burn 400-1000 more calories than you consume per day.
My diet was already good but now I am cutting out the few bad things that sneaked in... Like fries and chips and beer. If you have to record EVERYTHING, you realize very quickly what's good and what isn't. And I exercise more, pretty sad when the only thing on your activity log is sleeping. I am literally already in better shape and I just started on Saturday.
