And how has your musical taste changed since, say, 5-10 years ago? Well, I listen to a variety of music but I guess my favorites would be the smiths, nick cave and the bad seeds, joy division, the birthday party, bauhaus, radiohead, nirvana, the flaming lips, ministry, the swans, david bowie, sex pistols, pj harvey, patti smith, leonard cohen, jeff buckley, etc.. 5 years ago I mostly listened to the beatles and led zeppelin and 10 years ago I listened to mostly foo fighters, nirvana, and grunge music. What about you?
I think your musical taste is always evolving, if you allow it to. As a kid I listened basically to top 40, because that was all we could get. Then 1977 and the punk thing, which opened a few new doors and, crucially, introduced me to reggae, which has stayed with me through the years. Then I started time travelling - getting introduced to stuff that pre-dated and influenced the stuff I liked. Then kind of moved sideways into world music, jazz, soul, some classical... Current favorite overall ? Tom Waits... but 5 years ago I didn't know anything of his. Who else is waiting for me to discover them ? Maybe tomorrow I'll hear something that blows me away, and here we go again...a new love affair
Been a huge Smiths fan for a glorious ten years or so, they opened me up to new music (I was 14) At that age friends were listening to Wheatus or whatever, so it was 'cool' to me to stray from the norm- they were like a little secret of mine. Of course people took the piss, but those same people now try to talk to me about how brilliant they are, ten years later, 'cos it's now popular to like Morrissey (feckin' indie kids). Otherwise, i'm huge on Prince. I like Prince almost as much as The Smiths. Then there's The Cure, Joy Division, Queen, Springsteen etc. But newer music is great also. My favourites are IAMX, Ours, Dredg, AFI (older era), Opeth, Placebo and Tool. I like shit loads, but I really recommend Ours and IAMX, both are truly awesome.
I know what you mean by the way, I thought I would find nothing interesting for a while, and was getting sick of the current music scene (this screamo stuff) But I discovered Patrick Wolfe the other day, and i can see a pretty big love affair has become.
