so im 16 and i go to henderson highschool. I ware headband, lenon sunglasses, groovy shirts, bangin' pants and sandels (most of almost all of which i got from thrift stores). however my school has problems with my headband...its simple tiedye (done myself) but they make me take it off often. I dont see the logic because i have long hair and do infact use it to keep my hair out of my eyes. I am a boy by the way and i see girls waring the same headgear for mainly the same purpose. Some one told me there was a law passed that waring a headband in school is ok because its considered right of speach or something of that nature. When told to take it off i never have a good suported argument. Any help on the matter would be appriciated. :prettyplease: -peace

For real. Tell them to suck it. Headbands are not a problem at all.

It's all part of a dress code, and dress codes went the way of the dodo, back around 1970.

Dress codes are devilishly hard to enforce, because they're a sort of discrimination. Most lawyers would advise their clients (in this case, the school board) not to push dress code enforcement, because they can't really win the case. At least, that's the way it was back in my day.

I know this, because in 1970, I was instrumental in getting the dress code abolished in the school I used to attend. A bunch of my friends were kicked out for not getting haircuts, the year after I had graduated, and they came to me, because I was like the only radical in our small hometown. I took them to see a lawyer, but the first one we talked to said he couldn't take the case, because he was on retainer to the school. It would have been a Conflict Of Interest - but, he said he would advise the school not to pursue it, if we challenged them. The next one we went to practically jumped at the chance to take the case, because he knew it was a solid winner. Of course, the thing never went to court and the kids were all reinstated, without having to get haircuts. The school annual was very different that year. Almost all of the guys had hair to their shoulders. :D

The point is, unless they can show some valid reason why you can't wear a headband, they can't win that fight. They really have no right to tell you what you may or may not wear, unless it's illegal.

Schools tend to become very steeped in traditional values and need to jolted every now and then, to bring them up to date with current values.

i see...well for example im in school right now and was threatened by a teacher that i had to take it off "or else"

another one said to take it off and i fought and questiond with logic...her defence was "do it because i said so"...the natural response for someone who dosent have a true reason for it....so anoying

Typical. Those are the responses of someone who doesn't really have a good response.

Get a few like-minded people together and go see a lawyer. Maybe you can get it changed.

We have SSA, you have to wear the certain color polos and pants and stuff. Sucks. But anyways wore a headband I made, that was tye dye, and one teacher said it was GANG RELATED. I was like...Okay. Whatever. I dont go to the best school, and there are gangs, but none of their colors are TYE DYE, they do the whole solid color stuff. And I told her that, and she tried to send me to our school therapist. I was like. Damn. Lol. But no, Im in ROTC, and our SGM. is pretty strict...exsecially when it comes to hippie stuff....but he didnt even trip when I wore that and the knee-hi socks with peace signs. He just called me an oxymoron and rolled his eyes at me. Pretty funny, right? Its all about the gangs in my school.

In my old school, there was a gang problem. Head bands were a symbol of certain gang memberships.

thats just it though...it states no headgear but no specifications...a lot of teaches dont care, some like it. but a few hate it and they are a major drag. not sure what their bag is, just martinets probably. no minds of their own just following the policys and rules strick and out of control.

i decided to have a meeting with the principals and the teachers that had issues with me today...layed down why i should be aloud to ware it, and said i would go to a lawyer if they didnt let me keep pn keeping on...they complied(of course) and gave me a note stating the headband is OK for any teachers that tell me to take it off and dont belief its ok.

Don't push it too far, though. In 7th grade I got expelled for the continuous wear of a blazer that had a couple band patches on it. Push it, but make sure you won't get in major disciplinary trouble.

Haha.. dude, I have no fucking clue. I would get in trouble for it every day, and every other week I would get a written dress code violation, but I was so into what I believed, and when I questioned what they were doing I never got a legit reason, so I continued to wear it. It had two Grateful Dead patches, a Pink Floyd patch, and a Bad Brains patch. Eventually, instead of getting a violation, I got pulled into the office and was expelled. At the hearing the principle said that I displayed no care for authority.

    There you go.

There are some things that are reasonable for schools to ban, like clothes that have images of porn, violence, foul language, or anything that promotes illegal activities, but lots of administration officials get carried away with their own sense of importance. Frequently, they stray far from reasonable.

Just keep in mind that you are a minor until you're 18 and you won't win if you choose to wear anything like the stuff I've mentioned.

i dont own any shirts like that...i have a shirt with a pot leaf on it but other then that i dont have them. i would also understand why they wouldnt want me to ware it...the worst thing i wore was a shirt i got at a BBQ that had "Grills gone wild" on it.

the headband was too...shady if you will. no specifications twards specific headgear that cant be worn and girls ware exactly what i was for their hair. I have long hair and used that as a reason (i do use it for that) but i kept the other reasons to myself. principal specifically said, "as long as it servs perpose for your hair im ok..but if you get it cut, or ware it in a way that dosent help your bangs it will be confinscated." so there you go...felt so great to take charge. I was pacing and waving my hands...making sence to them. valid reasonable points and i won. im free to express myself :)
