I know lots of people on this forum like Reggae music so I thought I'd find out what you think about this:

A couple reggae artists are having their shows consistently canceled in this area due to lyrics in some of their songs advocating violence against homosexuals. It's just about the biggest discussion topic at the moment. So do you think it is the venues right to turn away these musicians because they don't like their lyrics and don't want to offend the gay community?

A venue absolutely has the right to choose who they put on their stage. Period.

its their venue they have to rite to turn down anything they find offensive or explicit or just dont plain like and as a lesbian i woould not only be offended i would be down right disgusted.. if i was the venue i would tell them to play music that doesnt have offensive things like that and thats also a legal issue cuz threatning music could be get that venue or band sued or arrested

I agree. I dream of having my own musical venue one day...and when that dream of mine becomes a reality I will take an active role in researching every bands history, lyrics, religous/political beliefs...and I will only book artists I find worthy of furthering my own agendas. Muahahahahaha!

Plus...gay bashing is just ignorant as is any other hateful act...I dont blame the venues for canceling the acts.

That's what I was kind of thinking too and I'm surprised by how much anger there is in the community over venues refusing these artists and accusing the owners of being against free-speech, which seems off to me considering that they are private businesses.

If people want to listen to these bands I guess they just need to get their own venue where they can have the music they want.

I'm not too familiar with dancehall or reggae so I was kind of surprised at how many artists have gay bashing lyrics...

    Ofcoarse it is.
Many people wouldn't let gay bashing homo haters in there house.

Similar incident here not long ago... with the band Cannibal Corpse and their lyrics which revolve around killing/disemboweling/raping dead bodies etc etc.

The Chasers cover the issue quite well.

What do you think to the one above you.
You'd have to be really deaf not to understand those lyrics.

Honestly, I have a similar experience, but I'm not that into the rhythm either, my only exposure to it is through my boyfriend.

Yeah, Enjoy... I don't think Cannibal Corpse is very welcome in this area either due to their lyrics.

I just listened to Buju's boom bye bye and all I think I got from it is that somebody got shot in the bum and then went bye bye. Is that a gay reference?

LOL. I always assumed CC was a huge fucking joke... otherwise, I want to kick their asses for being so goddamn lame. In San Antonio metal is big, it's hilarious seeing fat 4th generation Mexicans putzing around in Cannibal Corpse gear.

I have trouble believing many bands are serious, though... their idea of what constitutes good music is so divergent from mine it's fucking laughable. I know some of them ARE serious... American Idol is SRS BZNS.... But it seems like such a crock. I am sitting on the fence between snob and outcast. It's comfy.

Yes, thank you Odon... I too needed the translation :p But I could tell that they weren't very positive, just not specifically what it meant.

    not mine

mmmm I cringe when I see people wearing band related shirts of people slurping on intestines.

I consider myself a music snob. I hate talking about bands I like with others in fear they won't appreciate it as much as I do. Or claim they love the band after only listening to 1 album.

Couple of years ago I wrote a 2,000+ word essay on music appreciation from my point of view. After this I came to the realization of how musically uptight I can be.
