being familiar with dancehall music, i will say that there are a lot of anti-gay lyrics out there. however, to say being gay will get you killed is not entirely accurate. in some lyrics they say "bun dem" (burn them) or "murda them" some camps of thought say this should be interpreted as a spiritual burning (not literal). but, then again, there have been hate crimes against gays in jamaica. we have to take ourselves out of our babylonian mindset. this culture is a product of history and tradition. it is wrong to be gay in jamaican culture. period. so, these artists may not see gay-bashing as wrong, but absolutely right! as far as the venues, they are private businesses, they can do what they want. i saw buju live this year and he is one of the best live performers ever.
I was raised in a pretty religous home. My parents had me in church as long as I can remember. They put me in a small private Christian school that I graduated from. I was taught homosexuality was never "okay" in my upbringing........then I grew up.
Or times have changed... No disrespect to Mr. Banton, but why would you wanna waste your energy on making a song just to bash someones sexual preference. I guess you really gotta focus on the negative to go the rasta way. Since I disagree with rasta views, does it seem necassary that I make a song called "fuck dem rasta's in da ass like a choo choo train?".....I don't think so. Maybe I should. Then maybe one day people would talk about me on the internet.
Saying "Oh, it's just because of their culture so it should be excused" doesn't exactly make it right. If someone grew up in a racist society I wouldn't excuse them if they started singing about killing black people or asian people or whatever. People might think any number of hateful things are right, but that doesn't make them actually right. And hate crimes against gays are completely wrong no matter what your culture is.
haha dont we all? posting on internet forums, smoking blunts, shopping for clothes in discounted stores, attending university with government funds, eating mass produced food, all sound like western civilization to me. What we must do is live the way our native cultures intended not trying to become part of another rasta is a dying breed and only a few true remain jah bless
Leviticus 18:22 / Leviticus 20:13 (Depending on Version) "V'ish asher yishkav et zachar mishk'vei ishah to'evah asu shneihem mot yumatu d'meihem bam." "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them." Sizzla - Nah Apologize "Rastaman Don't Apologize To No Batty-Boy ... Inna de Biblical bass we use to stone dem to death ... Yuh live in a clean land, then yuh can live with us ..." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hn0Y5ET0Vgc"]YouTube- Sizzla Nah Apologize 100% Sister! Ahoy, when you say 'their' culture, remember that the culture being referred to is African culture... and as we are all descendents of Africa, that makes it ‘your’ culture too. Also, um, you are mixing up race and homosexuality. LOL ... who told you that? Africa is a big place Bro, go check it out sometime. Rasta, is an extension of a much wider, larger, Biblical Culture that exists throughout Africa. Jah Guide!
So don, do you like songs that promote gay bashing like the previous? It's almost as if they have nothing better to talk about in their songs......sounds great. Jah guide you on your gay bashing path. I'm sure jah provide extra sensitive gaydar.
1) Are you supporting those quotes? Because they are stupid. 2) You are correct that every human came from Africa- but that was millions/thousands of years ago. To say we share their culture is incredibly naive. Culture and origin are completely different things. You could have two British people who's cultures are different. Haven't you noticed the difference between the bushmen in Africa today and the "High Flying" business man in America? Would you say their cultures are the same? I hope you are trolling. I really do.
i love how people who are anti-homophobia refuse to open their minds to the fact that it is a big world out there and not everyone thinks the way you do. ahmad, you are over generalizing. yes, some dancehall music does have anti-gay sentiments, but certainly not all. the type of music you are referring to is called "slack lyrics". But, there is plenty of positive "conscious" dancehall out there.
I'm not saying all dancehall music is like that, that would be crazy. Instead of being against gays, what if they were against white girls. Would it seem okay to you that they speak of killing you. Would you see it necassary that a song be made just about killing white girls. Would you want them at a venue close to your home? Let me guess, it would be okay because it's their culture and they don't see any wrong in it. This jah guy sounds nice.
hot fiyah! Sounds like some great advice for you and Mr. Banton himself. Perhaps i'm just looking through the eyes of the west...
well regardless of the gay bashing doesn't Jamaica have one of the largest murder rates per population? i mean they killed peter tosh for some money they never got... also aren't most dancehall artists not even true rastas anyways? i never heard jacob miller or any old roots artists' gay bash or even talk about killing.
Wow thanks for that. I had no idea. if I heard that song at a show I prob woulda danced along like a fool without even knowing what he was promoting! Buju is actually playing in my area soon and we were thinking of going....but instead I think Im gonna start a pro gay rally at the door and make sure to wear my "Homos like wedding cake too" shirt that I adore. Hope I dont get shot.
